Jewel Drydock in SF - Let the Games Begin!

I hope someone posts a Review with Pictures when they get back. I will be on the Jewel this October out of Houston's Bayport. This will be my second time on her. Beautiful Ship.

She is a beautiful ship. I have spent the most time at sea on her. I'm not too keen on changing the things I like about her. I liked the Star Bar because it was an intimate atmosphere. I liked Blue Lagoon because it has a better late night menu then Breakaway / Getaway. If there was any changes I'd love to see is putting the gift shops where Fyzz is and turning the gift shops into another nightclub like Bliss. The gift shop on the Jewel wastes a lot of space.

We were on the Pearl and the Jewel was docked next to us in San Fran. It was a pretty site to see them both. We will be sailing on the Jewel in Oct for the

3rd time. We were back on board to watch her sail away.

I agree - the gift shop is in a really stupid place to generate revenue. And not convenient if you do want to go there.

Be careful what you ask for. All the other ships with the gift shops aft that space became the new cave known as Spinnakers. Those on deck 8 aft now have to listen to DJs until the middle of the night and Spinnakers as we know it became more suites and inside cabins.

I'm not proposing they do a Dawn / Star type of overhaul to the Jewel. I'm saying the aft space would be better used as a larger lounge for passenger enjoyment. I don't know if the Pearl, Jade and Gem have windows in their Bliss Lounges but I think adding one to the Jewel is a good idea. The Fyzz Lounge is a good place to pass through and you can see in to see what is going on but it's not a great secondary venue to be in.

I agree the Spinnakers on Star / Dawn was a bad idea. There was definite need for sound proofing between Decks 7 and 8 and that wasn't done so now the people above pay for it. Such a shame because then it takes the fun out of the disco and NCL loses revenue on it.

Jade doesn't have a Bliss Ultra Lounge. It has the same layout as Jewel with the Galleria Shops aft and the Medusa Lounge (FYZZ by a different name) sandwiched between the Stardust Theater and Bar City.

The Bliss Ultra Lounge on Pearl and Gem doesn't have any windows except for a few that look out on to the promenade near the entrance. The interior is very dark. It's fine for a nightclub, but it's ill-suited for daytime activities or sightseeing.

I hope we get some more pictures showing what is happening in Dry dock. I had no idea all of the work they have o do. Very interesting!

I will be back over there this Wednesday. I will bring my Nikon w/ a zoom lens and see what shots I can get...

I have been following this interesting thread as well. Looking forward to learning more about the dry dock process.

Thanks all.

Why?

because any significant delay could delay their cruise. Last time Jewel was in dry dock there was an issue with a crane at the end of dry dock and it delayed the cruise by 1 day. That means missing a port and those flying in have to find accommodations. There was a delay at the very beginning of this dry dock but hopefully it will not affect their schedule.

I was just looking at The Jewel's bow web cam. There is still a ton of stuff being stored on the bow deck. If they are going to get to Seattle by Saturday morning, they will need to leave late Wednesday afternoon or very very early Thursday morning.

They don't need to get there in the morning early. No passengers to disembark

Not sure that was the Jewel it was in Boston. I have done a dozen cruises right out of drydock and never delayed. Were there crew still laying carpet on a couple yes.

It was the Jewel, and I was on that first sailing following drydock that missed 36 hours and 1 1/2 ports. Hoping it doesn't happen again since we are also on the May 17 sailing. I am not worried though, prefer to be optimistic and won't let pessimism ruin my trip! :D

Lol!! You know what? In looking back I actually came out of that sailing with extra casino cash (for ONCE). I hit a jackpot (my biggest one on a ship) and remember coming home UP!! Hmm, maybe the Jewel is my lucky ship? :D. Next cruise is your turn!!

We were on the last sailing of the Jewel before dry dock and chose the modified 13 night cruise since our plane tickets were out of LAX; we disembarked in San Diego 5/3.

Our sail away was delayed 4-5 hours in New Orleans, both to load up enough supplies for the 15 night cruise as well as a portion of the dry dock goods. More dry dock goods were loaded at our disembark point in San Diego, so the ship was not delayed in having supplies to begin at least the hotel portion of the refurbishing.

About 900 of us chose the San Diego end point, and room stewards indicated carpets being swapped out in casino, cabins and main areas of high traffic.

Many staying on board to help in a number of ways. I'm sure the vacant cabins and affected team members started right in, mostly behind the scenes, everyone put to good use.

I personally could hear work being done to some cabins above our 8100 berth, this was limited to hours of 8 am-8 pm and there was more noise from crew members chatting that much more than scrapping and light but repititive tapping sounds...I've heard louder rats in my (student housing!) day :D

As far as Moderno and Star Bar, this was one of my Cruise Critic Meet & Greet questions for HD Richard Janicki and crew. Moderno going in annex section of Cagney's and Star Bar-at least to some extent-remains. We made sure and let the department heads know how important the Spinnaker Lounge is to us, and never more than on our inside Passage trips. Loud cheers when reassured nothing but the carpet changing up there! Hope that helps.

One thing we were told, O'Sheehan's has a nicer/larger menu. I've been on 4 NCL cruises, all with Blue Lagoon or similar, and I didn't see much different...a couple pay options, like oysters (Spirit) and very god milk shakes (POA). What other menu items besides the usual burgers, wings, fish and chips, soup, salad, breakfast, deep fried apps and desserts?

KCFoxy...thanks for the information. I am so glad to hear that they didn't take out "Spinnikers" Lounge. They really messed up the Star and the Dawn. Its also good to have some of the Star Bar left. Perhaps now that Moderno has a larger location their Salad bar will be more extensive.
