Cruising with my Graddaughter what do I need?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's the deal, I got a great casino rate on a cruise so decided to take my Granddaughter for her Graduation gift. She is 17, has no passport, and we leave in 10 days.

I already know she will need her Birth Certificate and Letter from each parent with permission to take her cruising.

What else? I'd appreciate any help here. It would be a disaster if we were turned away because I didn't have what we needed.

Fantasy May 26th.

Thanks,

Barbara

She has to have government issued photo ID at the very least.... You did not say where the cruise is going to??? As she may need an emergency rush Passport.....

Go to the US Government passport site.... There are some other rules you need to make sure you follow this all...

Call Carnival!

A very good answer, but if they give the wrong info on the phone you still run the risk of being denied boarding.

Call the Cruiseline and check the US Government site :)

Make sure to have the correct birth cert. It has to have the raised seal, and she needs a state issued photo id. I am assuming you checked to see if your cruise needed a passport and know that she doesn't.

Don't forget to have fun and take a lot of photos of the 2 of you together, not just pics of one or the other of you. :)

The letters from each parent granting you permission to travel with your granddaughter must not only be signed by each parent, but notarized as well.

While it is not required, it would be a very good idea to have a temporary Medical Power of Attorney from the parents granting you the power to seek and authorize medical treatment for your daughter for the duration of your trip.

And finally, the birth certificate may or may not have a raised seal. (Some official birth certificates now have stamps in lieu of raised seals.) But it must be an original birth certificate issued by the state's Bureau of Vital Statistics (or the equivalent). What is not acceptable are photocopies of birth certificates or birth documents issued by a hospital.

If the cruise begins and ends in the same US port then all you need is her official birth certificate, valid ID, and permission from her parents. Is that at hammered dulcimer?

We just took our daughter, her husband and their 3 year old toddler with us on the Dream in march. We booked a separate cabin for them, one with a bathtub for the baby. Oceanview deluxe. That Tub and separate washstand was blessing.

Documents. make sure the birth certificates have .a raised seal on the back or somewhere on the paper. You can feel it with your fingers. Make sure it is signed. and even the raised seal ones will be signed by auto pen..but still.

She will need an official State photo I.D. School identification or Driver's License. The same type of I.D. needed to get on a USA plane.

Carnival is NOT your problem. The Border patrol is the one that demands just so identification. At least for American Citizens. Happy sails.

If she was born locally......you can go to the court house and get an official copy for a few bucks. If you have to request one..ASK THEM TO FAX it. It took me five months to get one for my Son in law from PA. I kid you not.

Besides the BC... I want to emphasize the notarized letter of permission of temporary custody, as well as a notarized letter to act in the parents behalf for all matters medical and financial. Chances are likely you will never need it, but best to have it. Not only for cruising, but any time you are taking a minor with you.

I thought that anyone 16 and older needed a Govt Issued photo ID???

Your are correct, I was wrong. Somehow I was sure it was through age 17, but after much searching found it on the Carnival web site.

Can you get her a state ID card if she doesn't have a driver's license? Ours are given to you the day you apply. I got them for both my children, just because.

"CRUISE TRAVEL

U.S. Citizens

Carnival highly recommends all guests travel with a passport. Although a passport is not required for U.S. citizens taking cruises that begin and end in the same or a different U.S. port, travelling with a passport may help to expedite your CBP clearance upon return to the U.S. Additionally, passports are required in the event you need to fly from the U.S. to a foreign port should you miss your scheduled port of embarkation, or need to fly back to the U.S. for emergency reasons.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows U.S. citizens (including children) sailing on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port to travel with one of the WHTI compliant documents, listed below. Additionally, the same document requirements apply when taking a cruise that begins and ends in a different U.S. port.

• Valid U.S. Passport

• Passport Card

• Original or suitable quality copy of a Birth Certificate (Issued by a government agency: state/county/city) and a government issued photo ID if 16 years of age and older."

Ok, not to be confusing, but someone else cut and pasted from Carnival's website which said school ID ok for 19 and younger. I think a call to Carnival is in order. But I'd call a couple of times to see what answer you get the most.

I would also suggest that you take two copies of her birth certificate- one for you and one for her- May need it when boarding from a port- in Bermuda and Mexico I was asked (I think because I have a different last name) for proof that she's my daughter! You prob won't need it but can't hurt!

Well, I called Carnival twice, a few hours apart, and got two different people. They both said the same thing, I needed a BC with raised seal, and Id with photo. they both also said a letter from the parents with permission is advised, but not required. So, all should be good. We are going to Nassau and Freeport, and as we are going ashore in both places, will guard both the ID and the BC with my life. All I've ever needed was my DL and ship card in both places. We are good to go! Thanks for all the input.

While Carnival may merely "advise" the parental letter, ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) may "require" the document upon re-entry to the U.S. Without it, you could likely encounter some intense and possibly lengthy questioning by ICE agents before you are allowed to re-enter the U.S.

The situation? Or me??

The situation.

It is such a pain to travel these days with having to get proof for what ever one needs proof for...daughter or son with different last name, friends traveling with your kids, proof of divorce, proof to have grand kids come....makes it tough for a quick pack and go rate...

Yes, but it beats staying at home. lol

You just have to make sure to have all the T's crossed, and I's dotted. And don't forget your ducks, make sure they are in a row.

All's well with me, we have passports, and I can go at any notice, Granddaughter doesn't. I am pretty much using my Granddaughter's Graduation as another excuse to cram a cruise in between my B2B at Christmas and my next cruise in Sept.. lol
