trolleydolly Posted May 17, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2014 Hi. Just wondering. I am looking to get flights from New York to San Juan next April. At the moment American Airlines have released their prices but jet blue haven't. The price for American doesn't seem too bad though have to add on a checked bag fee. I don't think jet blue will be releasing theirs for more than a month or so and I have heard really good reports about them. Should I wait for the jet blue flights to come out or take the American now?? Have never flown on an American carrier either so don't know how they compare?? Many thanks. travelingmomonthego Posted May 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2014 Did you check Delta? I am flying Portland, OR,-jfk-sj in feb/march Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Kudos2Fly Posted May 17, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2014 Just checked with JetBlue, although I still have to wait a month for the JetBlue prices, but think I will go with them. I just did a "mock" booking and like the flights and pricing. Plus don't have to pay for the 1st check bag, which works great for us.
travelingmomonthego Posted May 18, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 18, 2014 Jet blue did look great for me too but I was too impatient to wait for the time period to open up. Needed to get time off work, hotel etc. Wished all airlines booked a year out!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
monicajay Posted May 19, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2014 It is always a dilemma whether or not to wait for Jet Blue. We have decided to wait as our only workable option (affordable and works with our schedule) so far involves a very short connection in Chicago and 3 legs on the way back rather than two. Crossing our fingers it will work out. If you join the Jet Blue FF program you will at least get an e-mail a day or two before the flights are released. If you are happy with the AA fares you might want to book them now.
trolleydolly Posted May 19, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted May 19, 2014 Oh decisions decisions..... Did check Delta but they came up more expensive. Think I will hang on for now but keep an eye on American prices. If I'm right in saying jet blue open up around June July for next April.
girlscruise2011 Posted May 19, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 19, 2014 I had the same issue last month and lost out on a great rate with American waiting for Jet Blue. I could have paid about $350 pp on American and ending up paying about $490 pp on Jet Blue. By the time Jet Blue opened their rates, the American flights went up to over $500. If you are comfortable with the American Airlines flight cost and times, I would just book it. Jet Blue is a gamble lately. Their fares just seem to be high lately. trolleydolly Posted May 21, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted May 21, 2014 Maybe I should just go for American?? Though the return flight is a little early 10.55 am which I think will be a bit of a rush from getting off ship. I don't suppose anyone knows what a 'good' price is JFK to sju?? I gave been quoted about $1000 for 3 though we have to add hold luggage fees onto that (about $150 I think) Thanks.

Sorry, not sure if that is a good fare or not. A lot depends on the dates. Try posting on the 'air' boards and include specific dates. There are some very knowledgeable people who answer. Boatingmom Posted May 23, 2014 #10 Share Posted May 23, 2014 Same quandary. Jet blue has Netherlands and tv's. The prices when they open will usually be within twenty dollars of American but the fares go fast.real fast:eek: Also don't count on them notifying you when the dates open.last time I didn't get the notice until about 3pm the day rates opened.I co u of only get the bargain rate one leg.the rest were sold out.

Another option is SouthWest Airlines. They do fly to PR from NY, and you have two pieces of checked luggage pp included. You typically cannot book before 6 months in advance- but a really good airline. Bring an iPad or similiar device to watch a move. Enjoy
trolleydolly Posted May 24, 2014 Author #12 Share Posted May 24, 2014 Thanks all. Have bitten the bullet and gone for the American flights. Really didnt want to risk waiting and I do think the rates aren't bad. I'm sure others won't be that much cheaper when they come out and if they are well hey ho. Maybe I shouldn't look!! But I know I won't be able to resist!!! Also. Flights dates are over Easter so know that could be dodgy!!!
Platypus_72 Posted May 31, 2014 #13 Share Posted May 31, 2014 You should look into Spirit Airlines. I'm looking for flights in January and Spirit's prices are $200-$300 cheaper than all of the major airlines and on Priceline, Expedia, etc. I'm not very familiar with Jet Blue. They don't fly out of our airport.

I gave been quoted about $1000 for 3 though we have to add hold luggage fees onto that (about $150 I think) Thanks. Just FWIW last July on the Carnival Valor we were told the night before disembarkation that although US residents can disembark at 7 but non-US residents had to wait until 8. We were told that this was how the port authorities in San Juan did it. We had a 10:30 flight to St. Maarten and figured that since we made plans to drop our luggage the day before while there on a cruise stop that we would be fine leaving the ship on our own around 7:30. Long story short, we spoke to guest services and they contacted the port authorities in the morning after the ship was cleared and guest services notified us to come down to the desk at 7 and a few minutes after 7 we were escorted off of the ship and we were at the airport by 7:30. We are Canadians so we did not require a Visa, only passports, so I am not sure if that mattered.

I booked a Jet Blue flight for my daughter and son in law from Raleigh to San Juan last Feb. for a trip the end of August and paid $350 pp. I think you did good and now you don't have to stress! firemedic1560 Posted June 4, 2014 #16 Share Posted June 4, 2014 Jet Blue is having a killer sale right now from Ft. Lauderdale. I got $83 one way and $99 back, both non-stop.
youngestof9 Posted June 25, 2014 #17 Share Posted June 25, 2014 I was stalking NY to SJ for January/Feb. Before JB's flights came out, I had my eye on an American flight that was at it's low $334 pp and it's high $470 pp. Kept fluctuating. But you have to add $50 each way for the 2 of us for bags. So I held out when JB released. JB flights were $341 pp so I bit the bullet and bought them since for about 2 months they hadn't gone under $334 for any other airline. I couldn't imagine them dipping much lower. Now they are $374. I really like JB and like having 1 free bag pp, so I'm glad I waited. I know you purchased already, but I figured I'd add my 2cents in case anyone finds this thread. Now to book a hotel overnight. Holy crap the resort fees are killer! FYI I "stalk" flights on http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm - you can't purchase from there, but if you put in all the info, you see all the flights and the prices. 3 people for $1K is decent to San Juan, especially over Easter. trolleydolly Posted June 25, 2014 Author #18 Share Posted June 25, 2014 Thanks everyone. In all honesty I'm sure I'm not talking about $$$ here as the difference so am 'fairly' happy that I went for it. I know that I won't resist looking at jet blue fares when they come out. It's all a leaning process as we normally cruise out of Europe. And if I got a little but stung on airfare I'll know to hang on for next time (if there is a next time of course!!) :) I have also taken the plunge and booked a refundable hotel in sju but I'm keeping beady eyes open!!! :D Happy cruising (isn't it stressful booking holidays!!!) Ed Posted June 30, 2014 #19 Share Posted June 30, 2014 American right now for Feb 21, 2015 departure is $373 from Miami to San Juan. To Me seems high. JetBlue hasn't released their prices yet. Spirit is $198 without seats and carry ons so I am figuring add another $80 with seats and luggage making it around $280. What would be a reasonable price for Feb travel from either Miami/Ft Lauderdale and does anyone thing JetBlue will come in lower? Thanks
Boatingmom Posted June 30, 2014 #20 Share Posted June 30, 2014 (edited) Americans price has fluctuated from 321 to 349 to what it is now. In the past Jetblue will open in that range or 20 cheaper. I always say I should have booked earlier. The$79 flights are not the norm anymore Edited June 30, 2014 by Boatingmom
trolleydolly Posted July 14, 2014 Author #21 Share Posted July 14, 2014 Well jet blue have opened bookings now till end of April 2015 and I had to take a peek..... They opened yesterday and I looked today (17 hrs after they opened) and flights were $1600 approx MORE (for 3 of us) than I paid for american!!!!! That also takes into account what american will charge me for baggage. So I'm very happy I jumped when I did. Of course if I had looked the minute they opened they could of been less so I'll never know on that one but I was only 17 hrs behind open date. This is for flights JFK to SJU over Easter time. Very happy cruiser :D
MsB1254 Posted July 14, 2014 #22 Share Posted July 14, 2014 We are cruising Feb 14 - 21st and got an e-mail a couple of days ago that they were extending their bookings last night at midnight. We are set - I really prefer Jet Blue for the extra leg room and free 1st checked bag.

I am very happy though that I didn't wait and pay another $1600 (including what I am paying to check in bags with American) for extra extra leg room. I can cope with that on a 4 hr flight! Have a great cruise.
girlscruise2011 Posted July 15, 2014 #24 Share Posted July 15, 2014 For some reason Jet Blue isn't the cheap airline it use to be. I was peeking for some possible cruise dates and flights from Boston to FLL are around $600. Thats just crazy! From now on, if I find affordable airfare, I'm just booking. Waiting for Jet Blue the past 2 times has bitten me in the butt.
Ed Posted July 17, 2014 #25 Share Posted July 17, 2014 Just booked with AA since at the time JetBlue had not released their fares for Feb 2015. We live in Miami so would prefer leaving from MIA rather than driving to Ft Lauderdale. Interesting thing with AA was the roundtrip for Feb21-Mar1 was $373/pp. when I booked one ways going and coming it ended up at $267 out of MIA. Jet blue just released there flights from Ft Lauderdale and they were $237/pp. it is worth the $30 bucks not to have to drive. Good luck
