Air Arrangements: London to Venice...Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

In November we will fly from London to Venice (either on a Thursday afternoon or Friday morning) for a cruise from Venice on Saturday. We will book one-way tickets as we flying home directly from Venice after our cruise. Does anyone have any suggestions on whether we should focus on certain airlines? We are not seasoned international travelers! Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would check

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

They search for all flights between two cities.

Check out Easyjet as they fly Gatwick to Venice and we have used them without a problem

Several of the travel web sites can be really helpful if you replace ".com" with "co.uk".

Since I don't believe I'm allowed to actually mention a site by name, I'll just say I normally use the site that shares the name as a small one or two person propelled boat (smaller than a canoe) that begins with a "K". When you use the "co.uk" it opens up your selection process dramatically.

You'll need to read all the fine print though as the cheapest airfare often does not mean the cheapest way to get there. There's some really great budget airlines/fares, but by the time you add in luggage, boarding pass, seat selection etc fees sometimes the more expensive fares from the major carrier ends up cheaper.

True about the cheapest price may not be so cheap when all the extras are added.;) The worldwide airline that 'flies the flag' (the UK one) can be the cheapest and has more flights.......from London Heathrow and London Gatwick, they even have a flight from London City Airport.

If you are already in central London, then IMHO the London City to Venice flight should be your first choice. The Thursday flight departs from London City at 1115 and arrives in Venice at 1420. You don't say which Saturday your cruise starts, but all four Thursdays in November are available for about £70 per person (including one checked bag of 23 kg = 50 lb). There is no flight on Fridays.

The advantages of London City are its proximity to the city centre plus the short minimum check-in time (20 minutes before departure, if you have bags to check). If, for example, you were to stay near Tower Hill, you could get the Docklands Light Railway from Tower Gateway DLR to London City Airport DLR (which is basically part of the terminal building), with one easy same-platform change at Canning Town. If you left your hotel at 0930, you'd probably be on a DLR train at about 0945, and you'd be at the airport by 1015 which is an hour before departure - and that's long enough to get bored at the airport. And it would only cost you £2.70 to get there (if using Oyster, or £4.70 for a cash single).

You may find other airlines offering you cheaper headline fares from "London area" airports, but by the time you've added in the cost of getting to those airport (let alone the amount of time wasted in doing so) and possibly baggage fees, you'll have spent more money and taken more time getting to Venice. Don't be seduced by the "cheap flights" headlines of airlines like easyJet. Always think total cost (and time) of travel.

I know that this flight would be slightly earlier than you might have wished, but it's impossible to waste time in Venice.

Why is it we can say EasyJet but not British Airways?

- looks like we can. BA is the best choice, but any flight from London City has to be a good option to.

Just being cautious....I've had posts deleted because it was interpreted that it was an advert...when it wasn't.:)
