Chesneygirl Posted May 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2014 We'll be sailing next month on the Breakaway and parking at the pier. Will we be able to drop off our luggage (and passengers) first and then go park?
VickiD59 Posted May 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Great question, and I'll be watching for the answer. We're also driving for our Breakaway in July. We've always had a car service, so this is the first time we'll be driving and parking two cars. My fear is there won't be enough spaces and we'll be stranded  Maybe whomever has the answer to your question, will also have the answer to mine. Thanks. njhorseman Posted May 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Because of the traffic flow at the cruise terminal you should drive directly to the parking lot on the top of the pier. Then it's an easy trip down one level on the large elevators to the check in level, where you'll turn your luggage over to a porter and then proceed to check in. (Sometimes there are porters available on the parking level, and if so you can turn your luggage over to them there before proceeding down.) gobo Posted May 20, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Last year we dropped off the luggage first with a porter then proceeded to park up in the terminal lot.:)
njhorseman Posted May 20, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Last year we dropped off the luggage first with a porter then proceeded to park up in the terminal lot.:) But that requires you to exit the terminal and swing back north on 12th Ave. to get back to the motor vehicle entrance at 55th St. If traffic is heavy it could take you quite a while to do it. That's why it's better to park first.
VickiD59 Posted May 20, 2014 #6 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Is there an exit ramp for those departing and leaving, and a separate arrival ramp?
gobo Posted May 20, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 20, 2014 True about swinging around again in the traffic - that was really annoying - I forgot about that part:p I'm all for parking first and hopefully I'll remember that next May when I'm on the Breakaway again. Rare Laszlo Posted May 20, 2014 #8 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Don't waste your time looping around. Drive up to the garage, you'll pay and go thru the security check. You can then pull over to the side and drop off your luggage and passengers by the elevator. Once down the elevator the porters are about 25 feet away. We were not able to stop and drop off passengers by the elevator on our last cruise, but we were there pretty early, and it wasn't much of a walk. I agree with others, not to drop off luggage with the porters first, because then you have to loop around again, and there will be traffic. sebas030 Posted May 20, 2014 #11 Share Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) Drove and parked 5 times form NYC...all of the above comment are true. You HAVE to arrive FROM the north on 9A south in order to take the exit to the cruise terminal, or from the east on 55th or 59th street and access directly the "service" road to access the terminal. If you come FROM south, then expect between 30 to 45 minutes of traffic ( at the peak rush hour of arrival/departure time ) to go from 46th to 55th street to make the left turn and enter terminal. Then I always go to parking level right away ( top level ). You either pay at pier 90 and exit the pier and drive down to 88 or you pay directly at 88...it depends on circumstance. Once you enter Pier88, you will be stopped by security and have to open the trunk to have a dog inspect the car. IF there in no one behind you, you may pull right over to your right, quickly drop all passengers and luggage ( this is right next to the freight elevator ). If there is a queue behind you, you will have to park and roll your luggage to the elevator. Take the elevator one flight down and exit to your left and make a second left to reach the luggage drop off zone and leave luggage with a porter with the usual 2$ per luggage. Then go back in and follow line to get to security...that's when I feel on vacation...that and the first sight of the ship when driving down the 9A :D . If you want to drop all passengers and luggage at the drop off level and go to parking after, then you exit the terminal at 46th and make a left IN TRAFFIC to 55th and enter terminal again and to parking level. This operation can be stressful if you have loosing 45 minutes in traffic. Even for someone with mobility issues, the walk in the parking to the elevator is usually not more then 150 foot and it on on asphalt and there is a ramp between road and the sidewalk that leads to the elevator. The last time we drove ourselves, and took the Lincoln Tunnel, and encountered that traffic. DH just drove straight an extra block or two, made a right-right, and made a left towards the ship - much faster.

BuffetPantsPls Posted May 20, 2014 #15 Share Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) from MA it's i95 all the way down to the Cross Bronx (GW bridge exit) to 9a (West side highway) take the west side highway all the way down from MA, going through jersey is a bad bad bad idea. If you're going to do that, I'd recommend going down to the Throgs neck bridge through queens then taking the williamsburg bridge back into manhattan. If yer doing this from 7am-10am then you'll hit traffic anyway, the tunnel traffic is worse coming into the city during rush hour. Chesneygirl Posted May 20, 2014 Author #16 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Driving for Massachusetts (mid September) what's the best route through NYC to the pier? This is the route that we take from Central Massachusetts and it works out great for us. Very little traffic and and the Wilbur Cross Parkway is all cars...no trucks or buses allowed. Makes it so much better. From our house to the pier is exactly 3 hours. From Central Mass you would want to get to I91 in Hartford and take it south to the Wibur Cross Parkway (exit 17). This becomes the Merritt in CT. The Merritt Pkwy becomes the Hutchinson River Pkwy at the NY/CT line. From the Hutch take exit 15 in New Rochelle to get on the Cross County Pkwy. Stay in the middle left lane, which will become the left lane when the road "scrunches". This leads onto the Saw Mill River Pkwy South which becomes the Henry Hudson Pkwy at the NYC line ($4 toll). Stay on the Henry Hudson to where it ends at the Manhattan Cruiseport.

We never did because we parked about a 100ft away and its not a big deal to roll our luggage

sebas030 Posted May 23, 2014 #25 Share Posted May 23, 2014 How much parking is there on the ramp? Is that the only close parking? How fast will that fill up? Check out the picture on this page : Official page of NY cruise : http://www.nycruise.com/manhattan-terminal/parking/ There are 2 parking like that and you can park in the way between the Pier. I would say there is about a 300 car capacity for each Pier. I have never seen someone here on CC mention they had to use offsite additional parking lot because the terminal was full. If you get there not earlier then 90 minutes after the ship came back in port, you shouldn't have any problems since the passengers will have started to drive back home and thus making place for you . I always get to the parking at around 9:30 and have no problem with parking...it is almost empty. Taken from my room at around noon : [/img]
