Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

I have had 4 balcony rooms, and have even had smokers next to be, and have never once had my clothes "smell like their cigarettes" like I said, to each his own! When I'm on vacation I look to relax, and enjoy myself. I have an EXTREMELY stressful job.. I'm a happy-go-lucky person, I guess. I don't let little things bother me. If I'm in the adult jacuzzi and a kid jumps in, my vacation isn't ruined. If I'm in the adult pool, and a kid jumps in, my vacation isn't ruined. I understand everyone is different, but I choose to not let little things bother me. You have every right to complain every time you see a violation of the rules, I choose to kick back, and sip my drink with a smile on my face :D:D:D

You go girl!

Some people just love to complain. whenever something starts to bother me on any vacation I just remember it could be worse and thank god I don't have to work there.

I would be upset by that only if it forced a non smoker who was there first to leave but I assume any reasonable smoker would be considerate of the non smoker. Just common courtesy and decency.

One must assume, yes assume, that we still have those traits.

It is foolish to argue otherwise

Has nothing to do with courtesy or decency. If the crew decide to change a previously non-smoking area into a smoking area, they have the right to do so and I have the right to use it. If you have a complaint with that, then as I suggested before, you need to take it up with the crew who are authorized to make those changes.

Yes, I agree, it is foolish to argue with those who have the authorization to make the rules on board but you have every right to argue with the crew if you choose to do so.

Carnival does have a playing / smoking rule in place but in my experience in Carnival casinos, doesn't enforce it. After a show lets out, that place is packed with standers. Especially if its cool/cold and breezy on the open decks.

And in the busy times (evenings) especially if it's tournament times, it is really difficult to get many open machines so there are always those standing around just waiting for some machines to open up. So there are standers then as well.

Yes, they do have the same policy as NCL in the playing area of the casino. What I do not know (mainly because I didn't visit the casino on the Epic) is if NCL allows smoking at the casino bar. As I said, on Carnival they do and one does not have to be playing (which would be hard to do anyway) if one is smoking at the bar. And before someone asks, no, Carnival does not have a "must be drinking to be smoking" rule in effect for the casino bar.

Come November 1 how many offenders do you actually think we are going to run into? You need to take into account that not all cruisers visit CC and may not be fully aware of the casino rules as us CCers are. I would think they would have new signs put up. Will be interesting to see how many come back here to gloat about tattling.

I also noticed that I did not receive an email from NCL for my upcoming cruise in November. But I wonder if that email about balcony smoking only went out to those who have a balcony booked (I'm in an OV GTY though I guess I could get lucky and receive a balcony)?

And based on some of the posts here, I'm sure many will complain even when they run into passengers who are in full compliance with the rules (such as smoking in a temporary smoking area set up by the crew).

Sure will. We call them the complain-a-holics or the Columbo want to be's. Some of us get our ammusement by relaxing, some by gambling, enjoying a nice refreshing drink on our balcony or by the pool, some by exercising and many by taking a dip in the pool but you will always find those whose ammusement is spending their time digging to find or creating a situation to complain about. Maybe gives them a power high? Those are the ones tying up the line at guest services.

Oh, so only some people got the email??? Did anyone here who has a cabin (not a balcony) booked after 01 Nov get the email????

Maybe didn't get one because I was in contact with my CAS PCC maybe they note it down that I am aware of the policy. Dunno

But this guy's complaining about non-smokers' potential complaining is just bizarre.

Have you not read the posts in this thread? 2/3 is NS complaing about the results of the new policy and the affects it will have on them in other areas of the ship. Most of the others are e-cig users such as myself trying to justify why a ban on e-cigs because they supposedly look like real cigarettes

That is a result of nothing more than NCL being in fear of all the complaining they would get from NS's. Their comments and fear. Not mine.

Also if you read closely there are very few real smokers on this thread.

Is that not what some of the non-smokers here are doing.........."if I see or smell anything that I could possibly construed in the slightest possible way as a smoker smoking on any balcony I'm going to call the police and my lawyer???"

You know what is so funny? I've never complained about a smoker, but because one poster (who I have on ignore, but can see when someone responds to them), continually says that we will peek over balconies, complain and tie up guest services, etc., I probably will do just that to make sure that his posts come true and would strongly suggest that others do it, to make sure he was correct in his posts. This is the poster that turned me from agreeing that e-cigarettes (except for flavored ones) were okay to use on balconies to disagreeing with their use, because of his disrespect for all non-smokers. For one to receive respect, one has to show respect, something this particular posts hasn't done.

I have someone also on ignore. I must say it has made it much more pleasant to read the boards without her bickering. Ahhh ignore feature is bliss lol

I won't lie.......if it's a really good looking female I may peek.........but I won't complain!! :D

On a lot of ships you don't have to be peeking to see on other balconies. Even balconies on the same deck. Princess has the least private balconies but others have what I call humps. Peeps should not count on privacy.

If people violate the NCL rule and use an e cig as far as I am concerned that is between them and NCL unless there is some irritating oder. I won't complain if I only see vapor. But don't forget that if I can see an e cig on a balcony that ships security probably can see it too. On Breakaway I could see neighbor balconies. It was not peeking. They were there.

Most if not all the lines have cameras that can see at least a portion of every balcony, day or night. I had heard it is now required for safety reasons.

Yes, for safety reasons and also if someone goes overboard they can see if they jumped, were drunk and fell, or were pushed.

I have written and then decided not to post to this thread several times but this one is spot on. The smokers quit posting 70 pages ago when all their posts were deleted along with all the non-smokers comments to them. The total disrespect on both sides was amazing. Nothing on this board will change anything and the five or six people (mostly non-smokers) who keep posting to this thread must not have anything else to do except spar back and forth with each other over something that may or may not happen. Makes no sense at all to me.

I'm an ecig user, my husband is a smoker. Neither of us wants to get into a debate about this issue with anyone on this board since it makes no sense to do so. We have sent our email to Mr. Sheehan and gotten our reply email and a phone call. We are happy with the response we got and will base our decisions on future cruises based on what happens on our next one, after the new rules are in effect.

I think the moderators are just keeping this thread open because as soon as they shut it down another would appear and the total disrespect would start all over again. As it is now the smokers have all gone on with their lives.

5 days to get a response from a Resolution Specialist Executive Office. Don't expect anything fancy, I think they just copy and paste. The response I got didn't even match what I sent.

For those of you who keep talking about sectioning off a block of rooms for smoking balconies, I received this email today in response to an email I sent yesterday regarding that topic:

Thank you for your email.

We did look at a range of possibilities when making the recent changes to our smoking policy as we always try to address the needs of all of our guests. However, there is a level of complexity when trying to designate certain stateroom balconies as smoking, as we may not always have someone who smokes in that room or the surrounding rooms. Therefore, we opted to keep the policy straight-forward. We understand this is not popular with everyone, but we do have designated smoking areas in various locations on each ship.

We appreciate you expressing your concerns. We hope you will continue to sail with us.

If I can assist you in any other way, please let me know.

Best Regards,

AnneMarie

Like I said, if it was an alternative, it would have been done years ago.
I asked the same question of John Heald from Carnival a year ago.

He gave the same answer in different words.

Now that his cruise line has "gone my way" I am willing to accept his answer.;)
