New Norwegian smoking policy

As the health and well–being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Saw this on the Royal Caribbean forum. They seem to be going "one step beyond" everyone else.:p;)

Carnival had the same casino smoking policy from Oct 2011 onwards. However, enforcement was a hit or a miss.

I like the opening phrase. Why then are they nearly the last to ban smoking on balconies?

Cause they are going to lose a lot of European cruisers by doing so.

Then again it really is all about insurance costs. Princess used to have a reasonable e-cigarette policy. I see they caved on that. Personally I think they should make all the alcoholics on a cruise spend their entire cruise in the bar...Same mentality as the e-cigarette policy.

Ah, the uproar that this will create. :p On the CC story of Carnival's recent ban on balcony smoking, the majority of commenters said that they were going to cancel their Carnival cruises and go with NCL instead. Looks like HAL is the last domestic bastion for balcony smokers. And you KNOW that won't last much longer.

What is the E-cig policy on Princess????

From the Princess FAQ:

Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the passenger's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

They used to allow e-cigs everywhere...

I think with there new ships Getaway and Breakaway and other coming on line they need to get new customers. A lot of people would not sail them because of the smoking. These are some beautiful ships and once people sail them they will be impressed. I know I was. I also like Princess but have to admit NCL has the best entertainment on the seas. They have come a long way back and I did enjoy all of the specialty dining. Also none of the cruise lines care about anyone health there hoping this will increase there bottom line. There just a little late in doing this.

Excellent. Thanks so much for this update. A big improvement.

To where? There's nowhere else to go but HAL (and that won't be long) or some of the smaller European cruise lines possibly or not cruise at all.

btw- They said the same thing about restaurants when they stopped indoor smoking years ago & it didn't seem to affect them at all.

They used to allow them anywhere except the theater and Dining Areas, unless another passenger objected. If another passenger objected the user of the e-sig had to stop.

I would guess that they had enough objections.

Costa, their European marque, has banned balcony smoking already. Europe has caught up to the US on this.

The e-cigarette policy has a bit of irony for us ..

When we smoked .. we had to go outside to smoke at home

I quit but Husband still uses e-cigarettes and I can't smell a thing and it is vapor instead of smoke so he is allowed to smoke inside .

Princess say if you want an e-cigarette you HAVE to go inside ..ah well .. I will be cruising and I won't care ..just seems ironic.

Are you sure about that? Their FAQ says: "We would like to remind you that smoking is not permitted in cabins, but only outside on private balconies.".
Has Princess banned balcony smoking?

Glad about the no smoking on balcony.we love to open our doors in the morning and sit in bed and chat about the day ahead.Last time we were forced to sit with doors shut as couple next to us smoked constantly.

If I boiled cabbage on my balcony all day,I'm sure someone would have something to say about that!!

Land based vacays. And yes many bars were affected by the smoking ban...some to the point of closure. Some took 5 years or more to bounce back.

By the way...Both RCCL and Princess can not fill their balcony cabins with non-smokers. I'm sure it has somewhat affected both lines bottom line

I do not think that the smoking policy is the reason some balconies are still available. While you will find an occasional exception the vast majority of their cruises sail with sold out balconies. Now if they would just ban the wearing of cheap perfume on balconies:D
