Review of Calvi, France

We were in Calvi, France on May 23, 2014. This beach town on Corsica was a delightful surprise. I really enjoyed the town, the walk to the Citadel, and the beach, all within walking distance of where the tender drops you off. If you want to walk to the Citadel, just veer to the right after getting off the tenders. We did the Citadel first. Others who walked there later said it was very windy and hot. We just followed the numbered signs. It appears there might be (or have been) an audio tour based on the pictures on the signs. Great views into Calvi from the Citadel.

The beach was also within walking distance and was not very crowded when we were there. Although we did not go swimming, it appeared you had to go quite far out to get deeper water. The water was very clear and the beaches were very well maintained.

Agree that Calvi is a great port of call - it's a beautiful town with a great beach - gorgeous sand which gently shelves into (normally) calm waters - very child friendly. Also there's a Foreign Legion base at the end of the beach - we could see them practicing their parachuting from an aeroplane circling overhead - several troops missed the beach and ended up in the water ;) Another idea is to hire a car and make the 20 minute journey past Calvi airport to reach the magnificent Bonifato forest for a short 2ish hour hike - IMHO you'll be following some of the best trails in Europe!
