How about the news just announced by NCL that their new ship will have a separate smoking room in the casino?

 

I wish all the cruise lines would do this in order to contain the smoke. Maybe Hal will do this on their new ship. Still doesn't solve the balcony smoking though:cool:

I'll have to look into this. Other than their suites being a bit overpriced, one of the reasons I've not rebooked NCL lately is that I feel their casinos are among the smokiest at sea!

FROM what I've seen, CC won't allow you to "shout" by preventing upper case only posts. But if you don't start in upper case, other than the initial letter, you can switch to upper case in the body. LIKE THIS!

 

I started the above paragraph with an all upper case FROM. If I'm right, it will now be lower case.

We mentioned in our last post that we had sent an email to Guest Relations sating that we had canceled our March, 2016 cruise on the Oosterdam due to the smoking on balconies policy. We received the following response last week:

 

"Dear ***

 

Thank you for your email regarding your canceled sailing aboard the ms Oosterdam, scheduled to depart on March 11, 2016.

 

We understand your concerns regarding smoking on board, and truly regret that this has caused you to decide to cancel your cruise holiday. We endeavor to balance the needs of both our smoking and nonsmoking guests. Currently, our policy is to allow guests to smoke on their stateroom verandahs and designated areas on deck, as well as in the casino on select evenings each sailing; cigar and pipe smoking is restricted to outside decks and verandahs. However, guest input is always welcome and thus we appreciate your comments. They have been forwarded to appropriate management and as attitudes toward smoking continue to change we will revisit this policy with comments such as yours in mind.

 

Again, thank you for your detailed feedback. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on board in the not-too-distant future.

That response you posted is exactly how I would expect HAL to respond...a generic response. At least you told them. DW and I did the same on our surveys.

 

Ref the casino, smoking was definitely not allowed in the casino during the 2 gala nights on Oosterdam. This was clearly posted in the daily On Location. I have no idea if it was enforced though. It was allowed on all other nights.

What a well constructed letter! It gives nonsmokers hope by saying they will "revisit" their policy. But it means nothing. And then they hope to "welcome you aboard in the not-too-distant future" despite the fact that the policy that caused you to cancel is unlikely to be changed in the "not-too-distant future."

When we sailed on Emerald Princess last December, they had two nights smoke free in casino. There were only 6 people at the slots and nobody at the tables, on the first night and a couple of people at the slots and 2 people at the Black Jack table. We went in several times during those nights and table dealers were not a happy bunch. Where were all the nonsmokers that wanted a smoke free casino?

We had our cruise chartered and were refunded. As I had done no research on the line I had been dismayed about the veranda smoking policy. The itinerary was good but we decided to rebook with Princess that has a no smoking on balcony policy.

We live in such an unfortunate age of political correctness, with people becoming such busybodies, preoccupied with what others are doing.

 

I applaud HAL for having the courage to stand in the face of the Pleasure Police and allow smoking on balconies.

 

There are many things I could get offended by with regard to my fellow cruisers. Maybe I find the obese cruisers disgusting. Perhaps I find their perfume revolting. Some are too loud. Others are obnoxious. Some get drunk.

 

But they all paid for their cruise, and I would never stand in the way of their having fun on their cruise.

 

It's too bad we no longer live in simpler times, where people minded their own business, and everyone had a live and let live philosophy.

 

And please, before anyone posts the predictable "second hand smoke" nonsense, that objection has already been taken apart on this thread.

 

Smoke em if ya got em, I say. The whole ship could be smoking friendly, for all I care.

 

Bravo to you HAL, for being the only mature adult in the whole damn industry.

Yep - a cruise line having a MAJOR fire which started on a balcony (presumed to be via a tossed cigarette) can more easily make that call!

 

HAL will come around, eventually.

Nope. Sure wouldn't. But then, you see, I would avoid any cruise line which allowed a guest to play boom boxes loudly in their cabin. If Acme Cruise Line allows guests to play boom boxes in the cabins, then that's their business. I'd just steer clear of Acme Cruise Line.

 

Perhaps Acme Cruise Line could have "Boom Boxes Allowed" Cabins. That would be fine, if they chose to do that. I'd just book a cabin in the "No Boom Box" section.

 

Of course, I wasn't aware people playing Boom Boxes on cruise ships was such a problem.

 

Naturally, I would assume most cruise lines have a policy about excessive noise in cabins.

 

Any other straw men you'd like to mention?
