USNUZULOOSE Posted August 12, 2014 #151 Share Posted August 12, 2014 I have sailed RCI often, and the "arcade" bit puzzles me, too. Granted, I do not play video games, but I would not expect $160 watches in the video arcade. So, here is my altenative guess....shopping malls are called shopping arcades by a few people. Royal caribbean's big ships have the royal promenade that some people compare to a mall. Items for sale, including watches and electronics may be offered for sale. One picks their item and takes it to a cashier to purchase...or perhaps shoplifts the item in this case. Most Americans would not call that area an arcade, well, perhaps an educated person might do so hoping to obfuscate bad behavior. I think you may be correct. But she also mentioned a nano iPod? I don't recall ships selling that. But I may stand corrected on the RC line. I hope to sail RC one day. I guess the next round I cruise I will check out an arcade and see what they are like. jmrothermel Posted August 12, 2014 #152 Share Posted August 12, 2014 10 years old with free reign on the ship? Wow, I don't think RCI went wrong anywhere, I think the parenting went wrong! As an educator you should know about the developmental stages of children....that they are not capable of making decisions while running around a 6,000 passenger cruise ship alone. RCI Cruisers 004 Posted August 12, 2014 #155 Share Posted August 12, 2014 You're kidding, right?? Ahhh nevermind. This isn't worth a response. Like I said have fun on your next carnival cruise. Hopefully they are all American. Excellent response ! All I can think of is they sailed on a different Allure than we did !

BND Posted August 12, 2014 #157 Share Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) I would prefer to hear the other side of the story also. I think 10 is too young to have the run of the ship. Our boys are grown, but all our family vacations were just that, family vacations and we never left them to go do something on our own, without them. We did family stuff and as adults we made adult decisions and didn't go off to do things without them. Some kids are easily swayed by others. For all we know the OP's son was the one who swayed the other boy and when the other boy felt the guilt and turned in what he had, the OP's son panicked. The OP can get as indignant and defensive as she wants, but we only have her side and her opinion which doesn't mean it's exactly what happened. P.S. Adding drama to a post doesn't make it more believable. Edited August 12, 2014 by BND

cruizinisthebest Posted August 12, 2014 #159 Share Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) Too bad the OP even posted about what the son did. The rest of the recap actually has some useful information in it that's mostly being skipped over. Oh well. Everyone loves to jump to the one thing that stirs the pot the most. Even I did it. lol. I will say to those that question the casino having expensive prizes in some of the games, last week on the Freedom my son won an Xbox One. Yes he won it! No sticky fingers. lol. I made sure to take pics with the casino manager handing over the prize after we were escorted to the cage so he could show all his friends! Not sure how to get in any of those machines anyway without winning. Edited August 12, 2014 by cruizinisthebest
janetz Posted August 12, 2014 #160 Share Posted August 12, 2014 There are several skill type arcade games that have a variety of prizes in them such as ipods, watches, cameras, etc. I have seen them in RCI's arcades. How would anyone get IN the machine at the arcade to get a watch?

gadaboutgal Posted August 12, 2014 #162 Share Posted August 12, 2014 The OP is so fortunate that her son was not caught lifting something in a store in Florida. He would be caught before he even left the store and would have been ushered to the manager's office to await the sheriff who would then have escorted him directly to Juvie. He probably was dared to pinch it from the area in the middle of the area where the shops are that have "specials". And I agree with you, if one of my kids did something like this, I certainly wouldn't want the world to know! It is possible the machine was inadvertently left unlocked or the kids could have forced it open. The OP wrote "There were hundreds of "unsupervised" kids on the cruise at all hours and MANY others...TEENAGERS...involved in the arcade incident!" This sounds to me like the "arcade incident" was more serious than is being portrayed. Like BND said we don't have the entire story.

You know now that I think about this, I'm not really sure how this kid would have gotten this watch straight from the arcade game. When my son won the xbox, the empty box had a sticker on it to take to the casino manager. Once we got in there, they escorted all of us to the cage in the rear of the casino and I had to sign twice for it. We took a few pics with the casino manager. Point is, the box was empty in the machine, then they packed everything in it. Yes I bet OP is sorry she said anything. Hawaii697 Posted August 12, 2014 #168 Share Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) I appreciate the comparison of Royal and Carnival. My family and I are considering a RCCL cruise in 2016 for my daughters graduation. However, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that you are never sailing on RCCL never again because your unsupervised son stole a watch, he did not return it where he got it from, security yelled at him, hopefully scaring him straight and you blame the cruiseline for his actions. He needed to be held accountable for his actions. I also feel you may be embarrassed because he was caught. Ten year olds are easily influence and will follow what their friends do. Ten year olds should not be left to wander around, especially at night on mega cruise ship. In this day and age, there is just way to much going on. I hope he learned his lesson. As for your reasoning for not sailing RCCL again, you really need to give them another chance . . . if they let you. Spurschick Posted August 12, 2014 #169 Share Posted August 12, 2014 I agree...they didn't have self sign out until the 3rd day when they proved responsibility...ie...checking in when told...back at stateroom at specific time...and not getting in trouble. I had no reason to think that they would have done something so stupid. Unfortunately, their bad decision overrode their excellent behavior on the first 6 days...I am a good parent with great kids...so sad that many of you think you are so superior. Sent from my iPhone using Forums It is not about trying to feel superior. However your above comments don't make sense. If they didn't have self sign out until day three then I can't see how they managed to meet you at designated times / places unless they were already given free roam of the ship. If they were in AO and not able to self sign out, none of the above was possible as you would have had to have physically collected them.
Bcshur Posted August 12, 2014 #170 Share Posted August 12, 2014 For any of us that have had our cruise experiences interrupted by unsupervised kids running up and down the halls screaming, I read your post and have to wonder what you were thinking to make that decision. The safety of your children and respect for fellow passengers should be paramount. I just don't think 10 year olds should be allowed free run of the ship while the parents are gone to supper with friends. I agree! A ten year old having free run of the ship? That in itself is a huge problem!
