Grandeur, NO PROMENADE, Oh MY????

 Share

Recommended Posts

My family will be going on a 10 day cruise on the Grandeur. This will be our first cruise as Diamond members, and our 2nd Cruise without the Royal Promenade.....I can't really remember the Radiance, because it was so long ago. I need some help....

1. What perks can we expect as Diamond Members? and will we get those perks on the Grandeur?

2. Are we going to miss the Promenade immensely? Do they have an area to watch football etc.

3. What exactly is the new smoking policy?

4. This is our first time sailing out of Baltimore. We live close by? Anything we should know?

5. We are staying in a Junior Suite (becoming spoiled rotten)...what is the size of the Junior Suites compare to "Explorer of the Seas"?

Anything else you would like to add would be appreciated.

You will have access to the Diamond Lounge on Grandeur. Continental breakfast for a coupole of hours in the morning and free drinks during the cocktail hours in the evening.

Smoking:

The Junior Suite on Grandeur is is around 20 sq ft smaller than on Explorer.

The Port of Baltimore is extremely well organized and efficient. It is, by far, the easiest in terms of boarding and disembarking.

The newly refurbished Centrum, with R Bar and aerial entertainment, will make you wonder why you needed a Promenade. No Promenade Café? - try the new Park Café in the Solarium with quick breakfasts and great hot roast beef sandwiches. Cool and rainy out of Baltimore? - no problem, the Solarium pool is enclosed, and warm.

Now you can experience receptions, parties and events like the Quest in a real lounge, not the ice rink or out in the "street".

Nuff said?

I've cruised on the Explorer so I know what the Promenade is.

How is the Centrum different?

The centrum is a vertical cylindrical space as opposed to a the horizontal space if the Royal Promenade. It still functions as a gathering place, but is much smaller in that respect than the Royal Promenade.

The JS cabins on Vision class ships are considerably smaller than what you will find on Radiance class and above and there is NO walk-in closet.

The bathroom, though it has a tub/shower combo is also smaller.

OH NO, that means my wife won't have her "dressing room" next month on Rhapsody? I am not telling her till we get on board. :p :D

I have cruised both ships. They are both great in my opinion. Grandeur is noticeably smaller but is very classy. I was on grandeur before the update. It should be very nice now. There is no promenade thats the biggest difference.

Means that if you want coffee or a snack after midnight room service is your only option.

I agree that the lack of Cafe Promenade does cut down on the amount of time snacks are obtained. However, Park Cafe is usually open later than midnight, sometimes until 2am.

We've sailed from Baltimore a couple of times. We live in Northern Virginia, and we love going from driveway to cabin in about 90 minutes.

The terminal is well organized. You will drive up to unload your bags, then park. All of the parking spaces are in front of the terminal building.

Inside the terminal the security line can be pretty strict about bringing on beverages. Ensure that you are within the cruise line's policy. I've seen them open up soda can cases and check water bottles to make sure they are all factory sealed and not an attempt to bring extra liquor on board.

The check-in process was very efficient and we were able to board the ship very quickly.

Disembarkation at Baltimore is also smooth.

Enjoy your cruise!

I thought that when RCI started charging the "service charge" on late night room service, they said that there would always be somewhere open for food, so people who didn't want to pay could still snack.

You remember who said that. Same person who said the DL would not have children during happy hour. Seeing the pattern?

I personally really enjoy the Centrum over the Prom. I remember feeling very packed in at night when everyone was down there and it was quite smokey from the casino! The Centrum feels very elegant and spacious and I love all the windows it has so you can see the sea :)

We're actually going on out first cruise WITH a Royal Promenade in April. Not sure what I'll think of it. Never needed a shopping mall on a ship before, and not sure that I need one now, but are willing to see what the hype is all about!

It's not a shopping mall by any means. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Have a GREAT cruise :-)
