Can you book a suite without having butler service

How you say it it makes perfect sense and if that's your choice thats great for you. But I believe the OP is in fantasy world. He claims he has no hot water and no inside toilet yet cruises in a suite. I think he doesn't want the butler because he doesn't want to pay for it which by all means is his choice but he's trying to fabricate many things thoughout this thread things just don't add up.

I hope you are joking because thats what the OP is doing: it's a British joke about northerners having outside toilets (which some still do - but they also have inside toilets) and not being on the main power and water supplies (which some people who live on the moors won't be, but they will have their own supplies). He was making a play on the stereotype, not being serious.

Granted EW has been known to 'stir it a bit' (we've had a run-in or two in the past:eek:) but this is a good example of British self-deprecating humour, tinged with more than a little irony.

S/he makes a good point though - those of from 'umble upbringings find the concept of someone serving us (in terms of butlers anyway) difficult to come to terms with. It is the personal nature of the service that is tricky (for me anyway). For example, we have 24 hour porterage in our building, but they are there for everybody, not just us (same as waitstaff in a restaurant for example).

Provided I treat them with respect (and tip where appropriate) then I will get good service and my 'social conscience' is clear.

I guess it could also be seen as a class thing. Most of us grew up having to fend for ourselves - the 'Downton Abbey' house full of servants is a rare thing in UK nowadays.

Thanks for your post. I am pleased that the humour was not lost on you or SteveH2508. Unfortunately English Northern humour is quite often misconstrued by our North American cousins.

I had caught it, and I'm not even British...but it was tinged with some aggressiveness which caused the humour to disappear.

I guess I am a bit confused as to why then you continued to lead everyone on when you are well aware that the majority of this board is your North American Cousins as you put it. Or was the thread all just a bit of HUMOUR to you as you just stated  Most people who come to CC come for information and to truly try to assist others not to have jokes played on them.

For those truly asking about the Butler service like it has been mentioned it is definitely no big deal. It is just additional service you would get in any very nice hotel resort that offers Concierge Services and Lounges. While Yes you could have your Butler unpack and pack your luggage but I would be willing to bet fewer than 3% in a years times ever have this done. There is absolutely no reason at all to feel this being strange. If you have cruised at all then you have had a Cabin Steward, it is just basically some one that does a bit more. My last two cruises with NCL All our Butler did was escort us to Cagneys the first day for lunch, bring us our afternoon treats at 3pm and made sure I had plenty of coffee creamer and Lavazza coffee. Actually never saw him after the first day and did not even see him the last morning to leave a tip which was sad. I had thought I would see him with our Concierge where we disembarked. I did leave a nice tip with our cabin steward who was one of the best we have had.

As I stated in post 67, I now have all the answers I requested as to if a suite can be booked without any interference from a butler or a concierge. I am rather surprised that the thread has continued. Sorry if you were confused.

I don't need a butler and won't use one for upcoming suite. I certainly expect my coffee / room service which is included in the DSC without having to tip extra. There is a limit to how much tipping one wants to do and NCL has it all figured out so I'll leave my daily auto tips intact but have no need to tip again to a butler I'll really have no use for.

You do realize that your butler, who you won't be using, does not participate in the DSC, and you, by virtue of staying in a suite and not tipping the butler, will, I effect, be taking money out of the butler's pocket. You are taking a suite that perhaps someone else would've booked had you not, and who would've, most likely tipped the butler. Also, it's your butler who ensures you have coffee and will most likely bring you your room service.

But you've probably stayed in a suite before and haven't used your butler. So, has that worked well?
