Yep, I have all of these symptoms on travel day as I have self diagnosed "vacation stomach". I handle all the details of our vacation and suffer the whole first day until I am settled, by the first evening my "symptoms" have usually disappeared. Stress does weird things and while it is unfortunate to have migraines and tummy issues it doesn't always mean someone is sick and contagious.

 

I have also had terrible seasonal allergies and felt like I was dying the first day and by day 2 in the clean sea air my symptoms completely disappear.

 

If I ever knowingly had something like the flu or Ebola I definitely wouldn't lie, a rocking cruise ship is the last place I would want to be while nauseous and of course wouldn't want to spread it to anyone else.

 

I still think the key though is washing your hands repeatedly and keeping fingers away from your face, and carrying wipes when you can't wash. In 14 cruises the only time I came home with anything was after scratching my eye in the casino (RC Voyager). Just wasn't thinking and came home with a stage 4 eye infection. Also, strangely enough I am a serious nail biter in real life, but refrain on vacation.

 

 

The question about a headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, can be caused by other problems, nothing that can be passed to others. Lots of people suffer from IBS, stress of getting to the cruise ship (airport, traffic, etc), can cause a headache, and IBS can cause stomach pain. I don't have IBS but know people who do, so yes, I would lie on the form if I knew it was nothing that could be passed on to others.

First of all, if I had Ebola, I'd prefer to be in the hospital getting the life saving treatment I need.

NOT being on a cruise ship, being miserable, with stuff coming out of both ends.:o How would that even be ENJOYABLE????????

 

Now, if I had a low grade fever, due to, say, a sinus infection, I may tell a little white lie.:rolleyes:

However, if you unwittingly contracted Ebola (let's say a few days before the cruise). This is possible, since many people fly to reach the port, and it is possible that someone may cough or sneeze on you.

You don't get it from being sneezed or coughed on.

 

Without exception, we know the disease vector for every single person who has had Ebola outside West Africa.

 

If I woke up tomorrow with headache, fever, diarrhea and vomiting, I'd assume I ate something bad and had a touch of food poisoning despite the fact that I live in Atlanta and work only 8-10 miles from the Ebola patient being treated a Emory/CDC.

To keep it in perspective so far 1 man died( in Texas) and 1 (maybe 2) health care workers have gotten the disease but so far NO one else! It all really has to do with the stupidity of the emergency doc in Texas but thankfully we don't seem to have a big outbreak and it looks like things will quiet down now. The cruise industry is just being extra cautious.

Imagine how it would be in this country if we got as worried about deaths from guns as we have lately about Ebola!!

You do realize that Carnival has the right to refuse anyone that shows any symptoms that you are sick to board the ship. I do not believe that was enforced in the past but since this Ebola scare Carnival may be more inclined to enforce the rules. Guests with passports from the infected Countries may be turned away from boarding the ship also.

Many parents send heir children to school sick, especially if they have to take off work. People will continue to do what is convenient for them (monetary or time) without thinking of the consequences. This includes lying on the health questionnaire. It's happened in the past and will continue to happen.

No maybe about the 2 nurses. Both Nina and Amber have been confirmed since last week.

No I will not lie about having ebola.

 

I don't have ebola, and don't why I would say I do.

 

If I was feeling ill, and thought there was a 1 in 10,000,000 chance I could have been exposed, a cruise is the last place I would want to be.

 

If you are treated properly and promptly, your chances of recovery are surprisingly good. The antibodies from surviving ebola stay in your blood for I believe 10 years.

I was 3 days in on a antibiotic treatment for bronchitis for my cruise this past April. My doc cleared me and Carnival just needed to alert the doc onboard. No problems. Lying should not be an option when you are talking about the possible health of thousands of other people. The people who lie never put themselves in the opposite position. What if someone lied and caused them to get sick. Bet they'd be trying to sue somebody.

Ahhh - not so fast. Experts have said that one could, theoretically, be infected if a person sitting next to you (with active Ebola symptoms) sneezed and those aerosolized particles made their way into your nose, eyes, mouth.

First, you'd have to read your policy and see what is covered. If it's covered, then you would have to follow the policy (e.g. go to a doctor and have him/her say you can't cruise, etc.).

I doubt many folks with a slight fever will not board a cruise ship if it means forfeiting 2 or 3 thousand dollars out of their own pocket. I also doubt insurance will pay if you don't board over a slight fever and it's cleared up by the time you go to the doctor or is diagnosed as something minor.

 

We seem to be expecting folks to self deny boarding, give up their entire cruise/air fare and forgo their vacation on the outside chance they have something contagious. We know that in 100% of the cases, up this point, they don't have Ebola. It is unlikely they have Ebola or even Norovirus. At most they might have a common cold and who knows if they are contagious or not.

 

I just don't see people staying home for a fever or anything undiagnosed.

There was something a few years ago when those medical forms were started, I don't remember what the illn was but they had medical folks screening passengers. There were a few people pulled out of line and checked.

If I KNEW it was ebola, I would want proper medical care. When I boarded in Seward for our Alaska cruise, I had food poisoning and could barely stand. No one stopped me or asked me any questions back then. I was sleeping on the benches in the pier I felt so weak. But I KNEW I got sick eating a salad the night before. Within 24 hours I was better. The thought of becoming increasingly ill on a ship (with a 70% mortality rate) is completely unacceptable to me and there is no way I would lie and be stuck in quarantine on a ship without proper medical care. I hope the treatment is better for average folks should any of us ever get ebola; the way Mr. Duncan was treated leaves one wondering about the ethics of our medical community. And I'm not talking about the nurses that comforted him and did their best to relieve his suffering, but the ones making the big decisions about his treatment options. One of the problems our society has is denial, however. The no.1 symptom of a heart attack is denial. If you were given the option of going on a cruise or quarantining yourself due to a possible ebola exposure, I suspect many people would deny their risk and answer in a way to allow themselves to board. JMHO
