Magic and Breeze leave Grand Cayman at 8 am

Does anybody know why The Carnival Breeze and Magic pulled into port in Grand Cayman early on Oct. 23, 2014 and then left by 8 am without letting anybody off either ship. The water is a little rough and the ships do tender here, but I didn't think it was bad enough to have to leave due to rough seas.

what we think might not be rough waters-- the tender captains do. If the waters are rough they will not tender you out-- and cruise ships will leave

There is a tropical disturbance in the area that may present serious weather without warning. If three thousand people disembark, imagine the problems with the tender boats will encounter by getting people back on board. I appreciate the Captain's call to value safety over everything else.

Grand Cayman is perhaps the most skipped port call in the Caribbean due to

Tendering conditions.

A little wind can stir up seas enough to cause problems loading/unloading the tenders alongside the ship.

The breeze arrived around 1am due to a crew member being injured. They also changed itenerary earlier in the week due to a medical emergency and docked in the international port at Cozumel. My sister is on the breeze on her honeymoon and things aren't going too well on board. Apparently there's quite a large crowd by guest service all chanting "refund!".

They aren't entitled to a refund.

 

If the port authority closes the port, it is game over. If the ship Captain decides the risk to the ship or passengers/crew is too great, it is game over.

 

All passengers agree to the ticket contract before boarding.

My wife is aboard "Breeze" as well, and called this morning to report the information noted above. She isn't "thrilled" with the way the cruise is going, but I doubt that she will be "chanting" at the Guest Services desk. ;)

They were told that the weather, and water was going to be too rough to tender into the port, and/or get everyone back. (Perhaps they are expecting the weather to deteriorate further later in the day.) In any case, I'd NEVER second guess the Captain, and the crew on safety issues. I'm sure she's having a MUCH better day aboard "Breeze", than I am here at home. :p

I wonder what refund will they think they are entitled to? Its stated on every boarding pass that the cruise lines can change itinerary with no notice. The people should receive a port refund for that missed port but sheesh-- 5 bucks?

 

Learned a long time ago if you want to visit a certain island-- fly there instead

Perhaps they want the same onboard credit and future cruise discount as the Carnival Magic's infamous not Ebola cruise for missing a port?

It would be nice, but there aren't a lot of empty ports around that cruise ships can just pull into.

We tendered in GC a few years ago with bad seas. It took 2 1/2 hours of standing in line just to get off the ship then when we did get on land everything was canceled. No water activities only expensive drinking. Wish they would have just skipped GC for us.

I'm on vacation in Grand Cayman and saw the two Carnival ships leave this morning around 8:30. It has been sunny all day today, but the waters were a little rough. I saw no motorized water activities today but did see one guy on a paddle board. We were in the water and it was similar to the waves in NC or SC. There are usually no waves at Seven Mile Beach so the water was very different today. I hate the cruisers didn't get to come ashore, but understand the precautions.

We were on Carnival Liberty this past April and missed Grand Cayman due to high winds and heavy swells. The port authority closed the port. Carnival has a back up port on the southern side of GC called Spotts Bay...that was also closed by the port authority. All passengers received a credit of $21.84 to our Sail and Sign accounts for taxes, fees, and port expenses. There was no back up, so we had an extra sea day.

It's like flying from one airport to another if you go to land at an airport where the weather has crapped out would you really like the captain to land anyhow and risk a very bad incident. People have to take two steps back and give there heads a shake.

I say thanks to all the captains and port authority people who try to do what's best for all travellers making a decision to go or not to go isn't easy when your responsible for from 30- 5000 people depending on the plane or ship you are on....

I was on the Breeze. 4 days of rain, missed GC, 2 medical emergencies, amd a Cozumel port visit from 3pm to 11pm. Not many happy campers.

 

In GC, the Breeze arrived at 1am after steaming at 22+ knots all afternoon and evening, offloaded a medical emergency, went back out and sailed in circles for 6 hours. My guess was that they went back out to keep the casino open but the official word was that it was done so the ship could deploy stabilizers and smoothen out the ride. When we arrived back at the port around 7am, the Magic was already there. Sat around for about an hour with tenders bobbing around both boats and then the Magic literally went into reverse and bailed out. We followed a few minutes later. Could not tender due to sea and wind conditions.

We were on the Magic. They tried for about an hour trying to find a position where they could tender, but the tender crafts were really bouncing up and down with the large swells so the Captain gave up and sailed for Cozumel. We were refunded $19 in port fees and taxes.
