tuolumne couple Posted October 29, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2014 Has anyone ever rented a car in Hilo? Do they deliver to the cruise port? Do we arrange this well in advance? or will they come and pick us up? Looking for the pros and cons, here, to get around in Hilo. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks, Tuolumne Couple. Boytjie Posted October 29, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2014 We were on the Pride of America and there were shuttles from the cruise port to the car rental facilities at the airport, which is nearby. It was really easy both ways. I assume HAL would dock at the same place.

kent4489 Posted October 29, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 29, 2014 We rented a car in Hilo... very simple. I think we rented from Harper car rental. Within walking distance of the ship. Easy!
jimmyvinny Posted October 29, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2014 We did too. On every port for Hawaii we used Thrifty. I think a couple places we had to use a shuttle to the airport, but it was free. Check Hawaii boards. And reserve your car early and join the loyalty Blue Chip program. It avoids lines and really expedited the process. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Forums mobile app

drgrinch Posted October 29, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 29, 2014 Wherever you choose to rent in Hawaii, I would advise against renting a Mustang or any other trendy/sporty car (especially convertibles) - they practically scream "rental" to thieves in Hawaii and are prime break-in targets in the expectation they will contain cameras or other traveler's valuables. I have been told by my island relations that the problem is compounded by the practice of the insurance companies automatically paying off, no questions asked, for all break-in damage. Of course the expense just gets passed on in higher fees...
