I don't think so, the music is my generation but the acting/singing reminded me of a bad high school musical.

Which pretty much describes the 70's & 80's - *ducks the rotten tomatoes* [emoji13]

For what it's worth, the glitch with the entertainment booking option is also an issue for the January 18th sailing as well. My husband just spoke with NCL, and they were unable to provide any reasoning for the issue.

Over on the roll call reports are that the 20% for pre booking are already filled.

Hi all,

We reached out to Norwegian to find out what's going on with Rock of Ages and here's what they had to say:

A small number of performances for a few cruises in January are being rescheduled for alternate days of the week and that is what we communicated to guests that had reservations during that time. We continue to offer four Rock of Ages shows per week on Norwegian Breakaway.

So if I didn't hear about a schedule change then I guess my booking for night 12 of the jan 4 sailing is still good?

I think I will be double checking this with a phone call tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up

Ok I called. They still show my ressie and have no official schedule changes.

Of course we all know anything is possible but I will hope for the best

I've seen the play before but on such a long cruise with so many sea days I am happy to see it again

As far as not being able to book ressies anymore she said it could be because pre ressies are full

She also offered to send me an email showing my ressies as myncl only shows something is booked but not what it as

It is what it is and I would like to see the show again but honestly anything is possible

Got my emails telling me to reschedule entertainment but if course my cancelled entertainment was still on my acct so a call to Ncl entertainment was needed

All is now rescheduled

IMHO the reason roa is NOT on the outgoing sea days is because the cast out of NYC wants time off after Xmas and doesn't want to start the 12 day cruise immediately

I doubt any of this was unexpected by Ncl as all of this stuff is contractual anyway. The issue probably was that they didn't remember to adjust for this when they opened up entertainment booking.

Does this surprise anyone with a brain?

They could possibly be bringing the cast on at the first port or using the days out of NYC to rehearse any new cast members they take on in NYC

Airfare if needed for cast that may want time off is pennies and they actually could bring on some locally trained troupe if need be from PR

Also There is definitely an ulterior motive / reason as to why they show dates are on warm port days

Doesn't the smart money think that roa would actually be quite popular on colder sea days?

I also notice they have some wine musical that is NOT commentary added as well. Surprise!!

Go ahead just tell how wrong I am here..... Not

I think on those cold day's and nights, they would be very happy with everyone spending money... in the Casino, speciality, and paid shows..... Cram it all in just like a 7 day cruise of fun,,, Were all going to be tierd when we get done with this vacation, No one will be seen on the cold treck home, we'll all be in our beds calling room service... 6 days and night of island hopping and party's and shows. Can we all keep up?

WELL...here is some official news! Entertainment is changing on the Epic - this says changes begin in April.

http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/pressroom/pressRelease.html?storyCode=PR_111714

Does that mean Blue Man group is going on the Escaoe or the contract is not renewed? Just curious....

We actually walked out of this show our first time on the Breakaway (Oct. 2013). Loads of people were raving about it, but just not our thing.

Cruised again on Breakaway this October and was wondering when that show and Burn the Floor would be changed up for something else.

The problem with your theory is that the ROA cast will also be on the 28 DEC-04 JAN cruise (on which I am booked). More likely, the Entertainment department scheduled liberty for the cast after the lucrative holiday cruises.

They could possibly be bringing the cast on at the first port or using the days out of NYC to rehearse any new cast members they take on in NYC

That's just not how it works. Except for emergency replacements, the casts are generally rotated on and off ship as a group. And the rehearsal period for new cast members is generally 3-4 weeks; the full cast rehearses on land, then transitions onto the ship as a group.

Your first assumption (that the cast will catch up with the ship at the first port) is more likely, except...

Airfare if needed for cast that may want time off is pennies and they actually could bring on some locally trained troupe if need be from PR

Your assumption is based on the notion that all of the cast members are based in NYC (and therefore a couple of days off would suffice), which is pretty unlikely - many of the younger cast members are cast directly out of college, and don't have the opportunity to take an apartment in NYC before their first contract starts. (My wife had a student who worked in her office who was cast in Legally Blonde on the Getaway; the student had to miss her graduation for the start of rehearsals.) Even assuming NCL chartered a plane from NYC to one of the early ports of call, none of the ports are in the continental US - that's not going to be a cheap flight.

And I highly doubt NCL keeps a backup cast waiting in port in San Juan, just in case. (And before you ask, no, you can't just grab an actor out of an existing road company and drop them into the onboard show - performing on a cruise ship is a completely different animal.

Warmer waters = calmer waters. It's difficult to do a dance-heavy musical when the stage is constantly rocking back and forth and the scenery is rolling away.

Rock of Ages on Broadway announced this morning that it is closing January 18. Could there be any relation?

Doubtful. The at-sea rights would be independent of the Broadway run - and I'm pretty sure the Las Vegas & touring companies will continue. Although it's possible that NCL might be looking to replace ROA with a different show when the contract is up later in the year. The complexities of mounting big productions at sea pretty much prohibit NCL from changing shows on a whim.

Right. It would most likely happen when Breakaway eventually heads into her first dry dock. One can look to Royal Caribbean as a recent example. They recently changed the show on Oasis of the Seas from Hairspray to Cats during a dry dock, and will do the same next year when Allure of the Seas goes into dry dock, swapping Mama Mia for Chicago.

NCL entertainment also messed around with the schedule of their cast shows for the the Jan 18 cruise. My guess is that for all these 12 day cruises they have special entertainers getting on in NYC, performing on the sea days, and then getting off in San Juan. They will either join the Caribbean rotation of from their or return to the states.

Time will tell whether or not this is a good guess.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am on January 16 Breakaway cruise and they are still showing the Rock of Ages show as a choice

Not sure when this cancellation will start or what will replace it

I did not book it since I saw the show last January and did not want to see the show again..

I hope they inform everyone traveling in January soon since it is a new show I will need to book it
