Carnival staff drinking?

On our Miracle cruise in October, they closed the Serenity Deck early one night for the crew party. Yes, the bar was open for them and they did have a great time from what the bartender told us the next day. Obviously only the off-duty crew members partied. We never seen them intoxicated and they were a fun crew. More power to them to have a good time on their off hours.

 

I don't think ship's crew ever has "off hours" while at sea. They must always be available and able to perform emergency duties in the event the captain decides to run aground. In port and not underway may be a little different.

Comedians aren't staff, they are contracted for their shows and can drink away. Even on stage.

Regardless, they did have a crew party that was put on by Carnival for them so they must be able to drink and I'm sure they have guidelines for that.

Been to numerous bars on port days where the crew will hang out for cheap drinks and free wifi. Belize is one of my favorites, last trip we befriended some crew and they let us tag along for drinks. Great time and we will be headed back there next trip. They also have a bar on the ship where they can have drinks when "off" duty.

Just because something is written in a book doesnt make it true, just like because it is on the internet doesnt make it true. I have not exactly been thrilled with my past 2 cruises, however, the vast majority of staff especially and i say this with hesitation it will be taken wrong "lower level" staff that is mostly comprised of younger people. My experience was they went way above call of duty more so then some of the more high profile staff. These "kids" are away from home, family, friends. As long as safety isnt compromised.....let them have some fun.

On my Behind the Fun tour, the guide put it like this:

 

Employees can have a drink or two but they can NEVER get drunk. When the ship is moving only the guests should have trouble walking straight, any employee who even looks like they might have had too much to drink is subject to discipline.

 

That is true for anyone in a leadership position. Federal law for any person in supervisory role on a ship operating into/out of the U.S. says they cannot exceed .04 blood alcohol level. That's half that of the legal driving limit.

 

However, it does not include all staff/crew - only persons in charge. Those policies are set by the cruise lines.

I know things have changed from when I was working onboard - however, all things haven't changed. I was a staff member rather than crew and we were never told we could only have x number of drinks. However, they did expect you to behave properly when in passenger areas (this was before staff bars and we were out almost everynight in the passenger lounges).

 

Crew members do have their own parties and they are definitely drinking more than 2 drinks - that being said, there were only a few times in the 2 years I was onboard that I got way too drunk. Most of the time, you knew you would be working the next day so a getting a little tipsy ususally sufficed.

 

As for not being able to drink alcohol within 4 hours of being on duty, I'm sure that does apply for most crew members just as it applies to my job now (I'm in law enforcement), and probably most other jobs. If it's obvious you've been drinking and you work at Walmart, I'm pretty sure you'd be let go.

If I had to put up with some of the people who post here, especially malicious gossipers, or people who throw gasoline on a fire and say "oh, I can't tell ya where I found this, but I did",I'd be knocking more than a few back.

We have never seen drunk staff or crew. We HAVE seen them the next morning, obviously dragging and having a hard time. My husband asks them if the party was fun and they always answer :D

I was told the crew is allowed to have only up to 0.04% BAC while on duty, and 0.08% BAC while off duty. 0.08% is the legal limit for operating a vehicle in most states.

Just off the Miracle last week and one night there were 7-8 crew members in the Frankenstein night club dressed in formal outfits each with their name tags on having drinks and dancing. Did not see anyone over indulge, so there is some rule in place. Did not bother us they were all dancing and having fun, but pretty much stayed to themselves in a corner.

True .... But the truly profession comedians are normally very careful to not become "over served" before they perform.

My young adult kids told me about seeing the captain drinking late at night, so yeah, it does happen.

 

I felt perfectly safe.

My first grade teacher taught us that believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.....and some of what you read...she improvised on classic quote. That is not true. It's law, not policy, and several members of staff and crew are muster station leaders. The .04 law would apply to them as well.

I was on the Sensation Thanksgiving and as I was browsing in the liquor store onboard... One of the photographers came in and bought a bottle of bourbon... Never have I seen this. My son said the counselor in Club O2 was complaining about being hungover one day. He told the teens that they have great parties sometimes but other times the crew just keeps to themselves.

 

I love the Sensation ... Fun crew. I think what the counselor said is probably the truth.

The Captain and some of his staff have bought me drinks when hanging out by the casino bar. I was on a cruise this summer when they put off the piano player for being drunk while on duty too many times. They let them drink but don't overdo it. ..Dennis

We were in Cozumel a few weeks ago on RCI Grandeur of the Seas and two female crew members came stumbling and weaving back onboard after boarding time. We (and many others) watched from our balcony. We heard from a couple of people that the girls were in trouble and were to meet with the Captain but he had to cancel and then he left to meet up with other Captains when Quantum arrived in NJ so he had to delay the meeting. We talked to another crew member who told us (DH asked) that they didn't know what was going to happen to the girls, but they would possibly be fired. Several others we talked to had heard the same thing. The girls were so drunk coming down the pier that 3 Mexican authorities (not sure if police or port) escorted them, never touching them, but herding them. They weaved and at one point started walking towards the ship a ways before the gangway and had to be herded back away so they didn't fall in between the ship and pier. I doubt they were able to work that night which didn't help their case.

I have been on cruise (not Carnival) where on Elegant night you could get your picture with the Captain. He was clearly over served. We assumed it was his night off and not concerned.
