Modifying gratuity value question

Not sure where your presumptions come from, but if you have a question just ask it. I am not a shy guy.

 

Often we encounter staff members that put in "a bit extra" to make our trip comfortable and special. I always take the opportunity to recognize those that give a bit extra by...well, giving a bit extra myself.

 

I was only questioning the mechanisms and functions in place to allow us to do so in anticipation of receiving the great services we've read that so many others receive. I never imagined it would lead to people accusing me of looking ways to cheat the workers. Have you done so yourself in the past and maybe feel guilty?

Steve, find out from your TA where your OBC is coming from. OBC from RCI is non-refundable, but can be withdrawn at the Casino with a 5% surcharge added.

 

If you have OBC coming from anywhere but RCI, then that should be totally refundable and can be withdrawn at Guest Services on the day prior to debarkation. Doing this, you can actually have cash in hand when recognizing those that made your cruise even more special.

We have a large OBC to use up. I was hoping there was a way to increase the tip amount for certain individuals above the pre-charged amount. For instance, if we happen to really like our daily room attendant, it would be nice to "give" some of that OBC to him or her instead of losing it as we leave the ship. Do they really not have a method for people to use OBC to increase tips, or add to a charge account to increase tips? Cash only?

There are mechanisms to lower and raise tips. You can handle both a guest services, or in advance with your travel agent. I have found an email to the cruise line after the trip expressing praise for the crew member is highly valued as well.

 

I have raised on many occasions, never lowered. You speak of presumptions yet you make a huge one about me, not sure where that comes from, but then again I do not have a Phd.

We recently had a good sized OBC that we wanted a portion of to use to tip "above and beyond" our prepaid gratuities. We use My Time Dining and must prepay gratuities. We got a form from guest services which requested the name and position of the person and the amount to be given.

 

I would like to add that you may (or may not) want to mention to the staff or crew member near the end of the cruise that you are doing this in case they thought your might be giving them something extra and then you don't. They would already know who had prepaid gratuities but probably wouldn't know that more was coming from you. For example a concierge that has been helpful throughout the cruise may be a bit surprised when you say, "thank you" on the last night and simply walk away.
