DenaM15 Posted January 2, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2015 We will be in Nassau next week, 8am-midnight & we are struggling with what to do. We'd like some beach time at a calm beach away from crazy crowds, do we have to do an excursion for this? Hoping the water is warn now. Would also like calm water where we can snorkel if possible. We'd like to get some local good food and see some history if we can. We aren't real touristy people but would like a taste of the island and relaxing. Any suggestions? cb at sea Posted January 2, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2015 Nope...no excursion needed! Google Bahamas, or get a guidebook, to find your perfect beach.

cruiseapril Posted January 2, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2015 On the Bahamas Board, there is lots of info about the Melia on Cable Beach and other resorts on that beach where one can get day passes or all-inclusive passes.
DenaM15 Posted January 3, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted January 3, 2015 We are considering the food tour and cable beach. Does anyone have feedback on either?
OCruisers Posted January 3, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Keep in mind the water temperatures in Nassau in the winter months are on the CHILLY side. ;) LuLu
Cruisin' Chick Posted January 3, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Your public library should have some guide books (they may be a few years old but beach info shouldn't be too out of date). Also there are tourism sites you can find by googling. But as Lulu suggests, you might want to be aware of weather conditions. Go on some weather sites (weather.com, etc.) and see what the forecast will be coming up.
DenaM15 Posted January 3, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted January 3, 2015 I have several books and have been watching the weather, just looking for personal experience. I'm leaning towards Cable Beach and we booked the food tour.
cruiseapril Posted January 3, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 3, 2015 The Melia on Cable Beach has big pools and a big beach area. If you look online at the site- there are good photos of the resort.
sail7seas Posted January 3, 2015 #10 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Water temperature can vary but it isn't unusual for currents to bring some cooler water to Nassau this time of year.
DenaM15 Posted January 3, 2015 Author #11 Share Posted January 3, 2015 He Melia looks great but we are only going to be there for a few hours so if rather skip the hotel day passes, there are public parts of Cable beach aren't there?
navybankerteacher Posted January 3, 2015 #12 Share Posted January 3, 2015 Cable Beach is rather crowded and not that attractive. A good alternative is Cabbage Beach, on Paradise Island - just to the east of the Atlantis complex. It is a beautiful beach with some facilities - no tour needed, just take a taxi from the pier - lots of taxis to take you back. You really want to play it by ear: if it is a warm day - the beach will be great, with water temp probably about 70 - but it could be quite chilly in Nassau in January, making for a poor beach day. sail7seas Posted January 4, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 4, 2015 Nassau's weather is often quite similar to So. Florida in winter. If FLL is having a warm winter, good chance Nassau is as well. :)
