envy4u Posted January 16, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2015 We do not want to go into Rome as we will be doing this post cruise. Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do in and or around this port from 7-7.

airheadfan Posted January 16, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2015 Have a look at Tarquinia - relatively close to Civitavecchia . You can get there by bus, which you catch across from the cathedral. Tickets can be purchased from a Tabac. Tarquinia is an Etruscan hill town with a great museum and a large number of well preserved Etruscan underground tombs. The town itself is pleasant and picturesque and when we were there in October it was almost devoid of tourists.
doctrd Posted January 16, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2015 Thanks for the tip, had never heard of Tarquinia before. We give that a try if no other options from this port besides Rome...

Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do in and or around this port from 7-7. We did a private tour with Rome in Limo tours from Civitavecchia to the hill towns of Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio. Beautiful towns! You can find more info on these towns in Ricks Steve's Italy Hill Towns book.
dmk Posted January 17, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 17, 2015 I am also interested in things to see in Civitiveccia and not, Tarquinia. Most recommend Tarquinia. Is there not anything to see in the town of Civitiveccia?

lazygal Posted January 18, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 18, 2015 There is a small free museum and a beach area within walking distance if you want to sunbathe, lunch, enjoy local flavor.
Rare Hlitner Posted January 18, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 18, 2015 Why not rent a car for the day (generally less then 100 Euros) and drive yourself to Orvieto for a nice walk and lunch. Then you can stop at Tarquinia on the way back to the port. Personally we are not big fans of Tarquinia (and not overly impressed by the Etruscan ruins) but do realize that some folks feel differently. whatnot Posted January 20, 2015 #12 Share Posted January 20, 2015 We have used Rome Cabs for an airport pickup to the port in Civitavecchia. We have also used them from Downtown Rome to the port. Besides a transfer, they will also do you a tour to Tarquinia and to a lovely quaint village for lunch. Stefano at Rome Cabs is a great guide and loves telling you about the history of the Etruscans in this area. Contact them and put together a transfer and a tour that fits your needs. We have probably used them 6 times and we have friends that have too.
kuldalai Posted January 20, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 20, 2015 Civitavecchia is a nice port town, but not much to see or do. Best bet is to hire a car and drive to Orvieto an absolutely stunning hill town. Climb the belltower, visit a charming Duomo and do not miss St Patricks Well. Access to Orvieto high up on the hill by road or funicular railway.
