Canadian cruisers!!

Recommended Posts

I don't want to burst your happy bubble, but I am not wrong.

I spoke to 2 reps and a resolution agent and they all said the same thing. We charged you $330 for onboard credit, but we cannot guarantee the amount you will receive onboard in USD - which is why we cannot send you a confirmation letter that states what you bought in USD. Therefore, I show up at guest relations with my confirmation email that only shows what I spent in CDN, not what the USD amount is - they charge me the going rate that day and I can't prove anything otherwise.

You're getting the wrong info.

Wouldn't be the first time Royal gives out wrong info.

I called as well, and my account has USstateroom credit of $300 in one room , and US $150 in the other.

Good Luck :) If that is the case, why can't RCI provide an email confirmation of your OBC in USD?????

Maybe so, but the amount may be different than what you think you bought.

Until someone actually has a direct experience with this I am not going anywhere near it......too many interpretations and NO confirmation of what you get in USD - only a suggestion of a card in your stateroom, nothing beforehand.

No worries I beleive what you heard no doubt, as we all know it seems everyone gets told something different from Royal. Just debeating if i am going to chance it or not. I figure regardless I am going to spend at amount. Ill leave it up to DW what she wants to do. (whos probably reading this now :)

Think of it this way, I didn't put $330 Canadian on my account... ( that's what you are saying I did)

I BOUGHT a $300 item, and had I paid in US funds, it would have been $300. I paid in Canadian so I was CHARGED $330. Very different.

Edited to add: stateroom credit from a travel agent doesn't show up on your confirmation either. It shows up on a card in your room.

I see what you are saying, and it does have it's merit - but.......

I don't deal in probabilities, I want confirmation of exactly what I purchased before I go. I print out all of my confirmations when I travel, so nothing is open to interpretation. If Royal cannot provide me with confirmation that I have in fact purchased $300 USD onboard credit (and not just an email showing what I spent for OBC in CDN dollars) then I am not 100% convinced.

I hope it works out for you - let us know..

If you wouldn't mind , when you get back next week, if you could just confirm here that the stateroom credit you purchased was the amount you recieved... Would be appreciated!

Call me crazy, but....your proof of the US amount will show up on your credit card.:) It will be a Cruise Payment from RCCL and it will say something like this for example -

01/30./15 Cruise Payment USD300.00 @ 1.10 $330 CDN

I just looked at my MasterCard statement for a Celebrity cruise and basically, it was listed this way. When I have paid for things with RCCL in the past - it has usually said "Cruise Payment Vancouver" but don't know if that has changed or not.

Anyways - of course, you cannot see your credit card statement until after the deed is done, but I always bring a copy along for proof of payment of ANYTHING on the cruise. It has come in handy once or twice to have the actual invoice to show them that I did indeed pay for my specialty dinners ahead of time (even though there was no record on the ship).

I also have had "incorrect" cards delivered to our cabin - Canadian TA sbc's - often the TA will tell you that you are getting $200US and then we would get onboard and discover that Royal had only given us $160US for example (because of the exchange rate). So, I understand the fear of this whole procedure. But, the proof WILL be on your credit card.

Just got off the phone with C and A. The girl at c and a got a supervisor and resolutions on the phone. They all confirmed the $550 and $660 Cdn is equal to $500 and $600 US. Just to ease my mind they put a note on our account to the effect. They said that the exchange rate today is $1.10. They also said that onboard credits are always sent to the ship in US funds and no conversions are done on the ship except for the cc that is used to secure your account.

I am sailing in 15 days. I will not yet have a credit card statement as proof of what the rate RCI gave me is.....this is why I won't chance it.

I too have called back to confirm the real story. (Long post, as I am typing this as I am put on one of the multiple holds)

She told me that my account has a $499 US credit on my account. I asked if the exchange rate changes before my cruise, will that change the amount of my $US credit - she said "no".. but I insisted that she check to confirm. A few minutes later, she came back and confirmed that I have a $499 US credit.

She explained it like this: The financial transaction was today - Royal Caribbean sold you an item($499 US on board credit) at the current exchange rate (10%) for today. They charged my card today. I asked for a confirmation to show that I have a $499 US credit. She said the only confirmation she can send me is the $548.90 CDN payment. I told her that I could go onboard, and they tell me that I bought $548.90 CDN credit, and not the $499 USD credit. She understood my question and how I could get screwed onboard. So, she forwarded me to the resolution dept for clarification

The resolution supervisor said the same thing - your account shows a $499 US credit (that I just happened to pay $548.90 CDN for). So, I asked her again for some sort of confirmation that I have this credit in $USD - she too understood my question, and my concern about the ship telling me onboard that I bought a $CDN credit and today's rate has changed... she totally understood my concern, and put me on hold to get an answer.

She came back again to confirm that my account shows $499 US credit. Anticipating this, I asked for confirmation to show that. She cannot give that to me she says.. but it's there she says. Of course, we all know how that COULD play out onboard, so I pushed (all the time being very polite, and nice). I told her basically.. my confirmation says I bought $548.90 CAD OBC - is saying nothing about $499 US. She is now taking it to the next level up (hmm, how far can this go?). To me, it makes SENSE that I will get $499 US - but I can see how they could simply claim I bought $548.90 CAD OBC, and this works out to $XXX.XX credit on board based on the current FX rate... argh...

Still on hold.. the call has lasted 44 mins so far... She is trying to find out if they can issue me some sort of confirmation that I have $499 US credit.

So.. she got permission to send me an email confirming that I am getting an $499 US credit onboard my March 14 sailing. That email is coming to me in the next 30 minutes, and she is even calling me back when she sends it to make sure I am happy with the wording.

How does that ease your mind when it is a note you cannot see?

I wanted a confirmation sent to me, and they wouldn't do it. Surely if they can put a note on your account they can send an email, right?

That makes perfect sense to me. I'll bring a copy of my CC statement, the proof is right there.

You can go online to check your credit card statement - usually 1 - 4 days maximum after it has been posted. And, if that doesn't work for you (meaning it is too soon to see it online) then you can also call your credit card company and they will tell you over the phone - the exact charge on the card.

I am happy with what they told me. I also have my CC statement on my computer that shows the transaction. If you are not comfortable with the transaction you should not do it. Each of us are different and being a Maritimer it is just my trust in people. If I get burnt so be it.

Well one thing is now for sure....with everyone calling in to speak with supervisors and resolutions they have now learned that their currency exchange rate is out of whack and they are losing money.

For those that have not yet taken advantage of this great offer you better do so quickly as it will most likely disappear very, very soon.
