satxdiver Posted March 15, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 15, 2015 Happy to hear the Sun stayed in port in NZ. Cyclone Pam (hurricane to those of us in the northern hemisphere) slammed Vanuatu as Category 5 later dropping to 4 as it made its way across the islands. Pam is now ranked as the second worse cyclone on record in the southern hemisphere. Pam has now cleared the islands and is out to sea. Australia is sending aid now and UK has promised help as well. I hope the Sun is able to stay out of its path. You may have your itinerary altered until Pam starts to dissipate.
Te Aroha Posted March 15, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 15, 2015 New Zealand has weather warnings out as the cyclone passes down the east coast of the country. We have been warned of 5 metre swells, heavy rain and gale force winds. It is currently off the coast of Northland. Auckland is getting heavy rain and the cyclone is slowly moving down the coastline. Not sure if they will try to move the Sun Princess while the seas are this rough, if they do, it will not be a pleasant ride for all on board. Saw pictures on our local station last night showing a storm hitting NZ but showing pics of Port Vila (sp?) and discussing the devastation there. Wish the folks at the TV station understood geography a bit better since NZ is a bit further south from Vanuatu. Couple hours and it's our turn on EP. skf Posted March 15, 2015 #9 Share Posted March 15, 2015 In 2009 on Diamond, going from Alaska to Japan, a Pacific hurricane forced us to detour thru the Bering Sea. On Dawn in 2001 we barely escaped one off Mexico. Then in 2002 on Golden between an ocean storm & an Atlantic hurricane we lost most of the large windows on Promenade deck. Please do not blame us for Cyclone Pam, as we are ashore at home!
Rare azbirdmom Posted March 15, 2015 #10 Share Posted March 15, 2015 Thank you for sharing the pictures and for the reminder of our wonderful visit to Auckland a couple of years ago. I truly hope that the storm passes quickly and that New Zealand escapes Pam's full force.
jagsfan Posted March 15, 2015 #11 Share Posted March 15, 2015 NZ has had more than its share of natural disasters, so I sure hope P foes little damage. Our favorite country besides the one we live in.
