Had a great time , BUT !

Just got off Liberty on March 15th and was not impressed that much. This is our 6th cruise with Carnival and the Celebration is still the best. As I have read over the last 6 months that the Liberty is very rocky, it was. We where rocking back and forth every day of the cruise and you could really feel it in the MDR. It did not put a damper on our cruise, but did make for some conversation. I did not like the cruise Director Greg at all, we really didn't see him much and there where some major announcements that he should have made, but did not. People where complaining of bed bugs, but we did not have that problem so it is only hear say. All in all we had a great time and loved most of the ship, but honestly will not do Liberty again. Sorry to all you Liberty lovers, but I say it like it is from our point of view. Cabin stewrad was great and Ivan, Dario and DWI was great in the MDR. Gran Turk was cancelled due to high winds, but we understood that. Again had a great time, but we really did entertain ourselves. We gave it a 7 out of a 10..

So the only thing you really said you disliked was the CD and your biggest complaint with him was he should have made some more announcements and been more visible. I couldn't get from your post what made you dislike Liberty so much that you won't sail her again. It would help us understand if you could give some specifics that made you feel this way. The couple flaws you pointed out, besides the CD, was something that you said didn't bother you. Not flaming...I just didn't get what caused your disappointment when you mostly seemed to be praising

If the ship was rocking quite a bit and there were not high seas, chances are good that it was wind, and you do mention that you missed Grand Turk because of the weather. Unfortunately we don't have much control over the weather and individual perception is a big thing on a cruise. I was on the Breeze in January with my mom and thought it was rocky; I thought it was fine. We did have a headwind but until you've been in 20'+ seas or in a named storm, wind is nothing. ;)

As for the Cruise Directory, unfortunately they can't keep everyone happy!

Hope you find something that pleases you more in the future.

All our cruises are pleasing I, we have cruised over 12 times (6) on Carnival so I know that ships rock on windy days. Grand Turk was only (1) day and it was windy. It was not windy everyday and everyday the ship rocked and everyone was complaining. It is the rockiest ship we have ever been on and I don't believe the stabilizer where out. Look back on reviews and you will find that that complaint is common with Liberty and I never once complained about not stopping in Grand Turk because of weather I understood the safety concern and respected that. As far as the Cruise Director, we where not the only ones complaining about him. He seem to cater more towards the older crowd and this was at the beginning of spring break. The morning we ported in Peurto Rico he never made an announcment that people could debark at all. Then when we missed Grand Turk the comedian was suppose to get on board and obviously couldn't, but that night hundreds of people where lining up and seating for the adult comedy show just to find out it was cancelled do to no comedian. They knew this far enough ahead an announcement could have been made. Also The karaoke was changed from one room to the next and people where waiting for over 30 minutes in the room it was suppose to be in just to find out they moved it was was already half over..

Sorry I did leave a few things out, you can read some on my reply Rinderoo.

Also one of the biggest things I left out was the fact that for Liberty only being 10 years old it is definitely showing it's age in a lot of areas. The steps for one example is missing all the rubber stair treads and are just metal which was very uncomfortable. A lot of ares that rust is coming thru where they would normally stay on top of all this. Being in the Facilities Maintenance field that the crew over time has not stayed on top of this ship like others, especially after being dry docked not to long ago. We did have a good time, but this time it was like staying at the Quality Inn instead of the Marriott which is how we always felt on all the past Carnival ships. We where on her sister ship (Freedom) a few years ago and she was great..

so out of that i got it was rocky, you didn't like the cd and the stairs didn't have rubber which made it uncomfortable... Whatever floats your boat i guess.

I was thinking the same thing... 3 things I wouldn't even notice.

We will be sailing Liberty in late April and the only thing that concerns me about your post is the bed bugs! If my DW reads this post she will get all skeeved out!

Been on the liberty 3 times with a forth coming up and never had bed bugs

I too have sailed on the Liberty and I never saw any bed bugs, thank God. I had a great room steward and our room was top notch the entire 7 nights. At that time we had Butch as a CD and he is Funny and probably one of the best cruise directors I've had the priviledge of sailing with. Yes, ships can be a little rocky but weather and high waves are generally the cause of that. It usually doesn't last that long but you can definately feel it in the MDR because you're sitting still so motion can be felt pretty easily. But that's pretty minor and it definately wouldn't make me NOT like a ship.

couldn't it have been the particular routing the ship took, with the "rocky" complaints?

I'm not up on the ships, but isn't this the same as some of Carnival's other ships in the same class?

Some things are important to some, and not to others. The bed bug comments are a concern, but would not be limited to the Liberty either. Can be on any ship.

Very true on the bed bugs. As for the route of the ship this is the same route we have taken on all of our cruises as we always do the Caribbean. I am not sure why this particular ship was a little more rocky then others we have sailed on. We sailed on Freedom a few years ago and didn't feel it nearly as bad as this one. Being someone that cruises quit often it was bearable, but was really noticeable. People would walk down the hallways and you would see them sway from one side to the other at times, almost like you had a little to much to drink. This is the best way to describe it..

I think my cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on the Liberty was the smoothest cruise I have ever been on. That ship barely moved, I almost missed the rocking. Wind and route may have had something to do with the OP's rocky experience.

I was wondering the same thing. Any more info on this OP?

The OP explained about moving the karaoke venue and canceling the comedy show, and the resulting confusion and unnecessary lines.

We are one of the few who didn't care for the Liberty either. I don't know if I really built it up in my mind or what. It was a nice cruise, but probably our least favorite.

OP

I can see where the lack of direction from the CD would be frustrating! Some people plan out their whole day's activities and if you weren't informed about when you could disembark @ port, cancellation of a show, and changing a venue, then those are legitimate concerns and should be forwarded to CCL. This gives them the opportunity to improve.

I have been on "rocky" cruises before, so bad that people were walking around with airsick bags and lurching into things. I have not been on the Liberty and by no means an expert on nautical mechanics, but sounds like you had some rough seas and probably would have experienced that situation on whatever ship.

So glad you made the best of your vacation and enjoyed yourself.

Liberty was the first CCL ship we sailed on, so she holds a special place in our memories. Have been on her 2 other times, with a fourth time coming up in June from San Juan. Will be interesting to see how rocky she really is, and how she has held up to the wear and tear since our last trip on her. I can't imagine her being more rocky than our Feb. Splendor cruise. I have never felt a ship rock that much - thought it was just that class of ship, as we had never been on her before! (and our weather was great - but windy at times - could have caused it)

Wow, the OP was just giving their honest opinion. It's crazy how people can get so defensive over someone's own personal review.

I'm sorry OP that you didn't enjoy yourself. Sometimes cruises with Carnival are hit or miss. I hope you have better luck next time.

Thank you for your review.

We were on that same cruise. I want to start by saying this was out 8th cruise and our second on the Liberty. We went on her several years ago and really enjoyed it so when we decided to do a family cruise (my husband and 2 sons aged 16 and 27) with my parents and sibling and her fiancé we suggested this ship. I definitely feel that there were some aspects that had gone down hill since the last time we were on her. I agree that the CD was not good (thought his name was Craig not Greg but could be wrong....goes to show how uninteresting he was if we can't even be sure of his name LOL!). Never once saw him out and about on the ship and his "live show" on the TV in the morning was painful to watch....seemed very awkward and forced. I must say though that they did make an announcement about the comedian not being able to get on board and therefore there was going to be no show that night. However, they made it early in the afternoon and we only heard it because we happened to be in the hall. If you were on deck or possibly even in your cabin you never would have heard it. The ship was rocky, more so then most cruises I have been on, although not enough to bother me personally. What bothered me in our cabin (7348) was a constant vibration that was very annoying. Made it difficult to sleep and everyone who walked in our room noticed it immediately....even our TV was in a constant state of motion! The ventilation system in the casino needs work....could smell smoke up and down the staircases for several floors. The entertainment has definitely been cut back on. On previous cruises there has been some sort of "show" every night but no more. There was only a couple of nights with real entertainment other nights were games (IMO games are for either during the day or late night in a smaller room...not the main show lounge) so that was disappointing. Buffet food was lacking in variety but the MDR service and food was wonderful (probably tied for the best we have had on 8 cruises), we LOVED the alchemy bar (amazing mojitos!), Guys burgers, and fish and chips station were wonderful (which was a god send since the buffet food was not terribly interesting), food at the Steakhouse was wonderful (although service was decent didn't feel as high end as other cruise specialty restaurants). So although we all made the best of it I would probably not cruise the Liberty again. I can understand why people love it, we did too up until a couple of weeks ago, but enough things have gone downhill that we would prefer to try another ship if not another cruise line.

We were on Liberty in January and no rocking whatsoever. Smooth as silk. I will say the entertainment in the main showroom was really lame. Ship had the 2.0 upgrades were nice. But this class of ship we have become burnt out on. Prefer the spirit class or Dream class. Loved the Sunshine. No Red Frog Pub on this ship or sushi either something else we enjoy.

Thank you, you said it better then I did and agree with all that was said. We where up on the top deck when the announcement was made about the comedy show cancellation. If you went to the Legends show then will remember Garth Brooks, that was me. Had a great time doing that one.. Thanks for your thoughts, I think people forget this is called ( cruise CRITIC).
