Anyone been to Glendalough monastery?

Recommended Posts

Glendalough is not a typical monastery in that there is an intact church, but rather ruins of several buildings spread over a large area. There is a lake as part of the grounds.

Set up in Glendalough's carpark are various vendors. I had to chuckle at the names chosen... named after one of the saints of Glendalough-Kevin's Kitchen!

What were the highlights of your visit? Had read there is a Monastary there, how much of it is still standing. Is it the building right by the cemetery?

Hi Mary,

I think that from the photos I have seen of the area it is mostly ruins with lovely Celtic crosses in the nearby cemetry...something very etheral about it all!

The whole site is monastic - in this context 'monastary' refers to a complex, not a single building.
