Handicap inside cabin. Size?

We are cruising on Jade next April. Husnand's mobility problems have worsened so will be using rollator, the kind with a seat. We have booked a handicap inside cabin. I know that handicap cabins are larger in order to accomodate wheelchairs but does anyone know how much larger?

Our inside cabin on the Jewel last month was 142 square feet, about 12'x12' and was comfortable but snug. That was before his mobility problem worsened, requiring walking aide replacing his cane.

Ship deck plans only give info about standard inside cabins not handicap ones. Have any of you stayed in handicap inside? Besides the bed ours has bunks that fold into the wall. In the past we've found that those crowd walking to get into bed. But we still opted for the single beds be made into a queen. Is that going to also be a problem in a handicap cabin or is there a bit more space by the beds as well as hopefully more space in the entry part of the cabin as well.

If it's a true handicapped cabin, there will be AMPLE room...they are designed for wheelchairs and their turning radius....there shouldn't be a "step" into the bathroom, and the shower should be "roll-in"...no lip.

They are usually about 1/3 bigger than the standard cabin of the same category.

Thank you. I'm hoping there is also more space between the wall and the bed when the singles are made into a queen bed.

Do you have a specific inside accessible cabin assigned and is it one of the sideway ones on deck 8 AFT ? The ones on deck 10 AFT looked to be bigger.

We have had accessible Oceanview cabins in the similar Jewel & Star, they are most definitely bigger for someone in a WC or walker, etc. to get around & turn around.

If it will help you visualize, I will upload them to Cloud storage for viewing & get the link up here. Didn't look like there's much video or pictures floating around specific to these category of cabins for your ship.

Cabin 8109. We had a choice between it and one on a higher deck that was more aft. DH prefers something closer to midship and near an elevator so, since this one is just around the corner from an elevator it is in a perfect location.

When we were on the Star and again when we were on the Jewel, when he had just a cane so we were in standard inside cabin there was very little room between the wall and the bed and the wall had the wall bed 'box' sticking out which made that very narrow space harder to maneuver. This is part of what he is concerned about now. The location of the electrical outlet was on that side of the room so he had that side of the bed for his CPAP, using extension cord.

These are from the Star #8098 - obstructed oceanview, starboard side - just forward of the AFT elevators, so it is very close to your location on the Jade. I don't recall seeing pictures of the accessible inside, but perhaps these will give you an idea of what to expect (minus the window with the lifeboat) The room has 4 beds (#4 is a pullman along the side/behind the corridor wall panel - 1 of the 2 main bed is below it. 3 of us in that room - and the #3 /optional bed was the trustle, even with that setup - there was room to walk around - and, without that - there is easily 4 ft. of space with the beds split apart for the opening in the middle.

The electricals/outlet would be against the long side of the wall, with the TV, safe and the table/dresser, etc. - being a "larger" room than the smallish inside, you would have your own long extension cord anyway, or request an extra one from housekeeping to connect the CPAP.

The bathroom is much bigger with room for the WC (and walker) with a flip-down shower seat, grab bars/hand rails, shower curtails and flat floor - get extra towels to help keep the area nearby dry. Storage space inside the bathroom is very limited so one of those hanging organizer would be useful & handy. The entry door is wider, just like the bathroom door - hopefully, these pictures help a little. I will look into the collection to see if I have any others (possibly from the Jewel sailing)

Thank you. That is helpful since I can see that the tables don't seem to be at foot of bed with narrow space but instead have room by them.We plan on having the two singles together as a queen so it is the space on each side of the bed that way we're concerned about. We'll wait and see.

The extension cord in hubby's CPAP case is plenty long so no concerns about that.

Thank you for the heads up about bringing a hanging organizer. I'll bring ours.

We have one but after bringing it once and not needing it, I didn't bring it again.

The photos helped. Thanks again.

Happy to hear and glad that those photos helped a bit - your specific Inside might be a little smaller than the OV seen above, but should be similar in layout & design, minus the obstructed/walkway/blackout window view.

With more room at either side of the Queen bed - the square table is movable. If you get the steward to re-position the bed to either side by 6" to 12" (or more) - you will create more wide open space for DH (away from that pullman bed that swing down from the wall. These 2 pictures (GEM 2012) was how we slightly re-arranged our regular oceanview cabin, yielding a lot more space

Or, you might want to consider having the steward turn the Queen bed 90 degree - as that will have a big wide open space in the middle of the room. Just keep that as a possible option.

The accessible bathroom is very spacious, there's open small shelf storage but not a lot of it, so the hanging organizer or something similar will help to keep everything close and at the best easy-to-reach height. Most of the time, we leave it at home as believers in traveling light, especially when flying is involved. Between now & next April, perhaps someone from CC going on the Jade can get some pictures of the cabin for you. :)
