My apologies - I thought I was looking at Encore, it is in fact HDNet Movies.

Dish gave me a free preview of Encore and I didn't realize HDNet was part of the deal.

I sailed on the old Westerdam the week the film crew and actors were onboard. They figured they'd get about 10 minutes of movie out of the week, but it turned out to be only about 3. It was fun seeing and talking to the film people and in one scene my husband's foot is showing for about 2 seconds.

It was fun when Out to Sea came out. In March 1995 we were on the then very new Ryndam and tied up next to the old Westerdam. Back in those days passengers could cross-visit other HAL ships in port. Since this was our first HAL cruise we did go over to the Westerdam to see what a different ship in the fleet was like. The Westerdam passengers were very interested in the new Ryndam as the S class ships were relatively new in the fleet and many had not had a chance to cruise on one yet. About the only limitation on the visit was it was only during a four or five hour period and visiting passengers could not charge anything to their accounts. We ate lunch in the Westerdam's Lido.

That is very interesting. When we emigrated to Canada in 1963 we sailed on the Homeric. When I sailed on the old Westerdam 16 years ago I knew it had been enlarged but did not know I had sailed it as a child.

Two different ships ;) In 1963, you sailed on Home Lines' SS Homeric, launched in 1931 as the SS Mariposa for Matson Lines, and used as a troop carrier during World War II. She was scrapped in 1974.

 

The current Thomson Dream (sailing for Thomson) was launched as Homeric in 1986 for Home Lines. In 1988 when Home Lines was taken over by Holland America Line, she became Westerdam and was 'lengthened' in Germany. You sailed on her in 1999. She became Costa Europa in 2002 and Thomson Dream in 2010

Copper thanks so much for the picture of the "old" Westerdam, 1986-present :) It answered a few questions I had about my first cruise -- I wasn't sure my memory was accurate and your picture confirmed my memories :)

Same procedure was done on all three of the Royal Viking Line ships when I worked for the line (Royal Viking Star, Sky and Sea.) They added the Penthouse Suites (first balconies RVL had), a little casino, lounge, and staterooms for another 200+ people (originally 500-passenger ships.) The Skald Club repeaters were not happy.

hi everyone,

we took her to bermuda in sept.1986. my first ever cruise & i got hooked!!

we left out of new york & were 40 friends. we docked in hamilton. she was so

majestic & had a great italian crew. every evening on the rear deck they

made us fresh pasta & we danced to stevie wonders " i just called to say i love you".

what beautiful memories we have.

 

i've sailed on celebrity, princess, r.c., carnival & hal & have to say hal is my

very favorite. i can't bring myself to sail on any other cruise line.
