I recently posted this on another board and another user suggested I re-post this here!

See Below:

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I hope you can help!

My husband and I are flying into Milan (MPX) airport on August 1st and landing at 12:15 pm. Our cruise leaves from Venice on August 2nd around 5 pm. I know we have plenty of time but I am having a really hard time understanding the route I need to take to Venice Santa Lucia Train Station. I want to understand in detail what to do. I saw posts about the Express train from Malpensa airport not going to Milan Centrale station where you can connect to take a train to Venice Santa Lucia station. I saw posts about taking a bus instead but I would much rather take a train if possible. I also saw posts about taking the metro system instead. Please help! I am getting frustrated with this overload of information and every place I look seems to contradict the next site. I also am confused about whether to use RailEurope or TrainItalia!

I am also concerned about making sure I do this right as the morning we arrive back to Venice when the cruise is over (6:45 am we dock) we need to be on our flight back to New York at 4:10 pm. I want to make sure I know how to do the route on the way back flawlessly so not to miss our flight!

Thank you so much in advance! Links and pictures are appreciated!!

Best Regards,

Amanda:)

First, Milan Malpensa is MXP; if you've booked a flight to MPX, you're headed to Miyanmin, Papua New Guinea. Assuming you're going to Malpensa, the Malpensa Express train will take you to Milano Centrale in about 45 minutes (the train station is located in Terminal 1 on level -1). From Milano Centrale you connect with a train that will take you to Venezia Santa Lucia. Use the Trenitalia website (http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en) for the tickets from Milan to Venice and back (much cheaper than RailEurope's prices); you can print them out before you leave and the conductor will scan them with a little hand-held device. You do not have to register on the Trenitalia website to purchase the tickets, and the farther in advance you book, the cheaper it is. The RT tickets for the Malpensa Express you can either buy online (http://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/) or at the airport station. If you are still confused look at this website (http://www.seat61.com/), specifically this link: http://www.seat61.com/Italy-trains.htm#.VbABFEX-PdA. It's really easier to do this than you're thinking it is; enjoy.

I wanted to pass on a Thread from earlier this year: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2165192 It has some helpful info about planning in advance and what to do if you miss your pre-booked train. Also, be sure to check out trip advisor, there is a lot of info on this journey there.

I did this train ride last year prior to a fabulous cruise that left from Venice.

Happy Travels!

Although you can save a significant amount of money purchasing tickets in advance, if you miss your train they are worthless. Given that you have no control over several factors that might delay your arrival, the risk may outweigh the reward. It would make sense, however, to purchase your return tickets in advance and enjoy the savings.

There are several trains each hour, there's no chance of being shut out because you haven't purchased a ticket in advance.

You can check on the Trenitalia web site (http://www.trenitalia.com/trenitalia.html) using the following stations:

Malpensa Aeroporto

Venezia S. Lucia

Just look at trains any day in the upcoming week to get a sense of how frequent these trains are.

Are you heading to Milan after you disembark for that 4:10 flight the same day? Or are you flying from Venice?

Yikes!

If Milan is your destination, I think you are cutting it too close, as you would have to be there 3 hours prior to flight. What if your ship arrives late? Just because you arrive at 6:45 doesn't mean you will be allowed off the ship that early (we were held up for 2 hours). What if there is a train strike that day?

If you are flying from Venice to US, no problem. But if you are heading to Milan, maybe you could add a flight from Venice to Milan instead of using the train back.

Just thinking of Murphy's Law (If something can go wrong, it will!)

Hope you have a great trip! Europe is an awesome destination!

We arrived in Milan (MXP) at the same time on Emirates this past June. When we collected the luggage we got out from Exit Door 4 and were exactly in front of the buses that takes you to Central Milan train station. There are several buses leaving every 10 or so minutes. The cost is Euro 10 per person and Euro 5 for the kids. It took around 45 minutes to get in the center of Milan in front of the train station. There was no traffic at that time of day. From there you can take the train to Venice. It is highly suggested that you go online http://www.trenitalia.com and buy your train ticket to Venice. Print the ticket and just show it on the train, no need to validate. The seat will be assigned to you when you buy the ticket and it will show when you print. I’m assuming that you’re arriving in Venice a day prior to your cruise, otherwise I’m afraid you’re cutting it too close!

There are two versions of the Malpensa Express trains. One goes to Milano Centrale to connect with the train to Venice.

The other version of the Malpensa Express goes to Cadorna Nord.

We have caught the Malpensa Express in to Milano Centrale twice. It will all be quite clear to you when you get to the station at Malpensa.
