Onboard Spending Bonus for Mariner Credit

Recommended Posts

Question about that..

We purchased a land tour from HAL in Alaska in 2008 before the onboard spending credits went into effect..

The number of days we spent on that tour counted toward our Mariner day credits but wonder if the cost of the land tour/hotel packages purchased through HAL would now count toward Mariner Credits..

Does anyone know?

I'm quite sure that, outside of Alaska cruise tours, no hotel/tour package counts. I really wish they did but they haven't for me. We've purchased them a few times, last time was in 2013.

When was the actual voyage? They rolled the program out in a staggered fashion, so the answer depends on the ship. There is a page on HAL's website that gives the implementation dates for each ship, but I don't have it handy.

My first cruise was a cruisetour in Alaska, in 2006, 3 days on the cruise and an 8 day land tour. Even though the land portion was not originally included as cruise days, my Mariner account was retroactively updated with credits for the days of the land portion of the tour.

We pre-purchased this online -- does it count toward OBC? TIA.

I don't quite understand your question. Most of this thread has been about pre-cruise purchases counting towards the calculation of cruise day credits for "onboard" spending. Your post asks about on board credit (OBC). If you purchased it online, then you had to pay for the cabana right when you booked it. So it wouldn't come out of your OBC which can only be spent while onboard the ship.

If you're asking if the cabana purchase counts towards your cruise day credits then, yes, it should. I've never purchased a cabana but I'd be very surprised if it didn't count. POA (or would it be Poohby Joe?) can probably give a more definitive answer.

As mentioned above HAL did credit us for the days spent on the land tour, but my question is if one was to purchase a land tour in Alaska through HAL would they also count the amount paid for that tour?

BTW it's not that important to us, as not planning another Alaska trip anytime soon, but a Friend asked & I have no idea..

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were speaking about other hotel/tour stays. As far as I know, one receives only the Cruise Days for the entire cruisetour and no additional days for the amount spent to purchase the land portion. That would be double dipping, and HAL would probably have to then allow cruise days credits for other hotel/tour stays.

According to my PCC, if you purchase shore excursions, pinnacle dinners etc. in advance they do not count towards your extra days. They have to be purchased onboard to be included in your shipboard account which is where the calculations are made.

Unless something has changed in the past month, your PCC is wrong.

Which doesn't surprise me, but saddens me.

If you check the Mariner Society FAQ, you'll find this:

Are any onboard charges excluded from the onboard purchases bonus?

All casino charges, cash advances, Future Cruise deposits, and associated fees are excluded. All other onboard purchases including Hotel Service Charge, Beverage Service Charge, taxes, pre-booked shore excursions and all gift items purchased online or through Ship Services count towards bonus cruise day credits.

I'd say the PCC better check their own web site to get the correct facts.

The roll out schedule is in the Mariner Society FAQ. Came across it when I was looking for the answer to the pre-purchase question. :)

Sorry - I did mean cruise day credits....thanks for the answer.

You don't get Mariner credit for what you paid for a cruise so why would the cost of a land tour count towards it?

No reason except that other shore excursions count towards your Mariner days, so why wouldn't a land/hotel package in Alaska be considered a shore excursion..;)

BTW I'm only playing "Devils Advocate" on this, but assume you are right that an Alaskan land/hotel tour would not be considered a shore excursion.. :)LOL

I am sure they consider being on the land tour being the same as being on the ship: you get a cruise day credited for every day on a ship or a land tour.

*Subject to a maximum number of spend days equal to your cruise length. Taxes, title and vehicle registration are extra. Please keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times. This comment was posted from a facility that contains nuts. Taxes and port fees do not count toward your spending total.

We should cruise HAL with you for supplemental entertainment. 😁

No, these don't count towards cruise day credits. Neither do HAL pre or post cruise hotel/tour packages. Perhaps the correct way to interpret the "onboard" part is that the expenditures that count are used during the cruise while one is onboard the ship.

even stamps bought on the ship count and transfers to the airport if booked on the ship ..

I'm afraid that your PCC is incorrect.

There is no way that I have as many cruise day credits that I have if it was not for the calculation being done on ALL purchases whether made prior to or during the cruise. I buy most of my shorex and make some reservations in advance of the cruise.

I agree..

Exactly. No reason for anyone to get greedy and expect double-dipping.

Responding to the OP....

We always pre-book excursions and specialty restaurants before boarding. On one occasion our Mariner account didn't reflect these expenditures as extra credits. I made a quick call to HAL and the extra cruise credits were added immediately. So by all means keep a record of what you have spent online so that all those expenditures are included. (That only happened once. All other times the totals were spot on.)

I'll keep that in mind. We have already booked quite a few things already. I have the transaction history from my credit card account.
