Prompt refund from Royal Caribbean - who'd have imagined it?

Last Tuesday, I called up Royal Caribbean to cancel a couple cruises that were booked with Friends & Family certificates. Given that they were related to a NextCruise booking, the representative did have to contact both the Resolutions department and Crown & Anchor in order to confirm that they would, indeed, be able to refund the deposits, but that was approved.

This weekend, I noticed some "DDA CREDIT" notices on my online transaction history in a few odd amounts. I then realized that they totaled $400, the amount of the deposits for those two bookings. I was surprised to see that Royal Caribbean had processed the refunds so promptly given some of the stories I had read where it usually would take a couple of weeks, if not longer.

What was also impressive was my bank's handling of the refunds. They were made to a card that had been replaced with a new card number (due to some security breach over the past year), but the refunds went to the old card number that Royal Caribbean had on file for those bookings. My bank successfully posted the credits to my account. Woohoo!

The last refund I requested was for a substantial price drop before final payment on my last cruise and it was credited back to my debit card which is tied to my cruise account. That was on a Thursday evening. The money was credited and IN my account on that Saturday morning. So not even two full business days.

  • 2 weeks later...
when we cancelled our cruise with RCI, the refunds showed up in 2 days. There was no fancy certificate or anything but there was a TA.

I normally book direct and any refunds due to cancellation always appeared within a few days. I was even able to transfer the funds onto another booking.

However, my last booking was through a travel agent in Australia. Our plans changed and had to cancel. It is now 4 weeks and still waiting for the deposit refund. This is for a cruise in 2016 so well within cutoff.

The TA tells me RCI now takes 6-8 weeks to refund deposits to Travel Agents outside of the USA. Come on RCI, are you for real? Are you going to pay the extea interest on my cc?
