RaiderFaninNM Posted September 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2015 What is the thing you like to do most in NOLA? First timer here heading out in Jan, what all you like to do, places to eat, stuff to not miss or try?

Rare Saint Greg Posted September 12, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 12, 2015 You have to have Beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Market http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-du-monde-new-orleans-6 You have to have a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens http://www.patobriens.com/patobriens/default.asp You have to have charbroiled oysters at Drago's http://www.yelp.com/biz/dragos-seafood-restaurant-new-orleans You have to have a Po Boy. My preference is the debris po boy at mother's...I also get a side of jerry's jambalaya there. http://www.mothersrestaurant.net/ There are also some good burgers in new orleans. If you venture to the far edge of bourbon street...and a couple blocks to the left Port of Call has good burgers. Drink a monsoon if you go there. Or if you want to stay closer Yo mama's has great burgers across from Pat O'Briens. http://portofcallnola.com/ http://www.yo-mamas.com/ Some cool bars I would checkout: Lafitte's blacksmith shop - oldest building in america currently used as a bar http://www.lafittesblacksmithshop.com/Homepage.html Carousel Bar - spinning bar in hotel monteleone http://hotelmonteleone.com/entertainment/carousel-bar Napoleon House - was supposed to be Napoleon's house but he never made it. http://www.napoleonhouse.com/
RaiderFaninNM Posted September 13, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted September 13, 2015 Once again Saint Greg you came through, wow awesome list! THANKS!!!! This will be our first trip to NOLA, so looking forward to it!!
trixiegal Posted September 13, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2015 I'm going to NO in less than 2 weeks, so this list is right on time for me, too. I've been 3x in the last 15 years but haven't been to a few of these places. Looking forward to showing my DD how unbelievably good the food is in The Big Easy! Bamagirl_gina Posted September 14, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 14, 2015 Saint Greg is spot on with his recommendations!!! Every trip to NOLA we head down to John Lafitte's and grab some voodoo juice (I call it an adult version of a Grapico slurpee--Delish!) Only other suggestion I would have would be Central Grocery for a muffaletta.
Rare Saint Greg Posted September 14, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 14, 2015 That's another good one, Gina. Just don't go looking for a Muffuletta on Monday. They're closed on Monday. http://www.centralgrocerynola.com/
lilchief27 Posted September 16, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2015 Looks like your food & drinks are covered :D. Last Summer, we took a wonderful walking tour of the French Quarter with FreeTours by Foot http://http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/ We also enjoyed the Katrina exhibit in the Cablido museum next to St. Louis Cathedral. Go visit a cemetery too - some require a tour guide. See http://www.saveourcemeteries.org/

gold1959 Posted September 24, 2015 #15 Share Posted September 24, 2015 Thank you, Saint Greg! I worked in NOLA (and elsewhere in LA) for MONTHS and didn't know about some of these places! I've added them all to my "short list" for our upcoming post AQ Civil War history cruise days in NOLA! Hubs is a chef (& I am, thus, his "foodie" LOL), so we are ALWAYS looking for great food recommendations- so if you have any other ideas PLEASE post them! :-) If you were going to do a "foodie walking tour" or something similar, which one(s) would you do??? Best live music? Best bars? Best places for historic NOLA? I know, I'm a pain! LOL I will say we had glorious food at Antoine's... & fab oysters basically everywhere we went! I think there is a law stating it's impossible to eat badly in LA... The sign "anything you want, fried, $4" always meant Really good food! :-) You have to have Beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Market http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-du-monde-new-orleans-6 You have to have a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens http://www.patobriens.com/patobriens/default.asp You have to have charbroiled oysters at Drago's http://www.yelp.com/biz/dragos-seafood-restaurant-new-orleans You have to have a Po Boy. I look at their twitter even when I'm not in town just to look at the donuts they have that day. https://twitter.com/DistrictDonuts I pretty much limited my list to places people could walk to from downtown. Some other places I like: http://www.donutsandsliders.com/#about http://www.crepecaterer.com/ http://pizzadelicious.com/ - Pepperoni Rolls http://www.thecompanyburger.com/ ***Apparently they just opened one in the CBD this week. Add that location to the list you can walk to now**** http://www.parkwaypoorboys.com/ For live music try to get to Frenchmen Street http://www.neworleansonline.com/tools/streets/frenchmenstreet.html Edited September 24, 2015 by Saint Greg
HCTiger9704 Posted September 30, 2015 #18 Share Posted September 30, 2015 If you have the time, check out The National World War 2 Museum. It can take almost a whole day to see everything. Even with a whole day, you might still miss stuff. But it is a great museum.
marshhawk Posted November 30, 2015 #19 Share Posted November 30, 2015 While the OP has cruised, the question is timeless. We went two years ago, and we are going again in 38 days-going back to Mothers and the French Market. We did enjoy the WWII museum, we stayed at the Staybridge Suites, and we will be staying there again. This time for something new to see for us, we will go to a service at the church, and we will go to the Aquarium. And because we now know how much fun just wandering around is, we wont be in such a rush. Cruise Happy! and Saint Greg, thanks for all the info, going back to read some about the places you listed. pathubia Posted December 1, 2015 #20 Share Posted December 1, 2015 We stayed out in the Garden District at the Prytania Park Hotel. They offer free parking there and you can leave your car there while cruising. Its a 10 minute trolley ride to the French Quarter. We did a Haunted History Tour which was great and we ate at a Jazz Brunch at the Court of Two Sisters. They food was out of this world!!
Bamagirl_gina Posted December 2, 2015 #21 Share Posted December 2, 2015 Our "go-to" place for breakfast prior to boarding is Hobnobbers. However, on our next cruise, we leave on a Sunday and Hobs is closed. So, looking for a breakfast spot. We are staying at the Doubletree just a short walk from Mother's, which we've been to many times and is great. But looking at other close options....has anyone been to Daisy Dukes and, if so, how was it. And what about The Ruby Slipper? Any comments or other suggestions?
