Hurricane --Hope the islands are holding up

Was wondering how the islands were doing during this hurricane and how the ships were doing on the ocean. Anyone on board right now?

The Caribbean Islands are holding up just fine, as the storm is not in the Caribbean. Bahamas seem to be doing as well as can be expected with some solid storm surge flooding and rain, based on the ongoing updates at Stormcarib.com dot com. T& Cs are doing pretty well with getting the outside rain bands...

Cruise Critic has been updating itinerary changes:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=6559

Itinerary Changes

Carnival Pride: Pride's September 30 itinerary from Baltimore will replace its October 1 call at Half Moon Cay with a sea day.

Carnival Valor: Valor's September 26 cruise from Port Canaveral will miss Grand Turk on October 1 and instead spend a day at sea.

Norwegian Getaway: On October 2, Norwegian Getaway will skip Nassau for a sea day before returning to Miami Saturday morning.

Royal Princess: Royal Princess will skip the line's private island on September 30 and October 2.

Disney Magic: Disney Magic has been forced to skip its scheduled visits to Castaway Cay and Nassau. The ship's new itinerary is Key West on October 1, Cozumel on October 2 and a sea day on October 3.

Disney Dream: Disney Dream will replace its October 2 call at Nassau with a sea day. As of now, it will visit Castaway Cay on October 3 as scheduled.

Disney Fantasy: Disney Dream -- which is approaching the end of a weeklong Eastern Caribbean cruise -- will skip Castaway Cay on October 2 before returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday.

Update (7:43 a.m. EDT): Princess has canceled Royal Princess' second call at its private island, Princess Cays. Joaquin has grown into a major hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour and is now expected to reach New Jersey early Tuesday. The hurricane warning has extended to the northern Bahamas.

Update (October 1, 10:35 a.m. EDT): Disney is the latest cruise line to make itinerary changes due to Major Hurricane Joaquin -- which has affected three of its ships.

Update (October 1, 1:47 p.m. EDT): Joaquin is now a Category 4 hurricane with 130 mile-per-hour winds. A number of states -- such as North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey -- are under a state of emergency.

During a hurricane the islands just anchor away, and it takes longer for boats to locate them :D

It's a major hurricane. There will be damage. Sitting here in FL watching for that turn. I am confident it will happen but the sooner the better.

Best Satellite

Currently the models show a turning to the east and the mainland is out of the "cone". Rains hitting the Carolinas might be intense and will cause some flooding.

I just learned that a 735 foot cargo ship is missing & the Coast Guard is searching for the ship. On Thursday morning the ship reported losing power near the eye of Hurricane Joaquin & was taking on water and they've been unable to locate the ship or to make radio contact with them.

Hopefully the 33 crewmembers are okay...the power of the ocean is amazing and my thoughts & prayers are for those in peril on the sea.

Praying for them.

Me too! Decades ago on an aircraft carrier on the edge of a western Pacific typhoon it was so rough that water splashed onto the front end of the flight deck!

"El Faro, was en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida. They said they received notification that the ship had lost power around 7 a.m. ET Thursday near Crooked Island in the eastern Bahamas, one of the islands most battered by the storm".

Has anyone heard an update on the cargo ship that has been lost? Is anyone on board a ship in the atlantic that is dealing with bad weather? How has the experience been? I was once in a bad storm on an old ship without stabalizers. It was almost impossible to walk without holding on to railings and they put "air" sick bags all along the hallways for people to use if needed. It was quite an experience
