Rare Kinkacruiser Posted November 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2015 (edited) Looking ahead at the 35-day Syd-Hawaii-Tahiti- South Pacific cruise in 2017 and appreciate that any trip to the USA will attract a higher insurance premium, regardless of the number of days spent there. I understand that heart/lung pre-existing conditions are particularly difficult to get for USA bound cruisers. Are you aware of an insurer who will cover a pre-existing (heart condition) for my then 74 year 'young' husband for the 2017 cruise? Highly unlikely, but is there any reduction in premium in that only 5 of the 35 days will be in Hawaii, USA? If not, don't you think there should be a special /reduced premium for cruises to Hawaii or does one try not to have an accident in those ports ? Thanks for your replies. mort1305 Posted November 18, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2015 Try Boomers Travel Insurance we have taken it out for our upcoming cruise (although not to the US). They covered ALL our pre existing conditions including heart. Give them a try.
jennyg2610 Posted November 18, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 18, 2015 My husband has heart issues and we just bought a year insurance with the pre existing from Australia Post. You need to ring them as they go through everything with you. Look on their website under travel insurance the pre existing. It does cost a little extra for USA. The travel insurance is taken out for the length of say that you are out of Australia.

rkmw Posted November 18, 2015 #5 Share Posted November 18, 2015 Anna if you do a dummy quote with Aus Post i dont know your age but with your husband being 74 its going to cost a fortune and thats not counting on the pre existing....nearly $900 for an annual policy and $1300 for 5 weeks for 2 people....have to shop around do you happen to have a gold credit card because you can get overseas travel insurance on the card if you put so much on your card, with my St.george one i only need to pay $500 and get the free insurance

wotaripper Posted November 18, 2015 #7 Share Posted November 18, 2015 Check annual policy's carefully before purchasing as some state in the fine print they cover frequent trips of some say 14 and some say 7 days or less so long trips of 35 days or so are not covered under these policies.Best to look for a policy where you select the region or country that the most time will be spent in which would limit the cost for five days in the USA. Thanks wotaripper. Lots of companies and policies out there so you really do need your homework. Pretty sure you'd be charged the full 35 days, even if you were in Hawaiian ports only 5 days. You might as well spend the entire time in the US if there's no difference in price. Cheers, Anna

It was good that Europe was your major destination then :). I suppose world cruisers would need to purchase a world wide policy. for the 100+ days. Imagine the cost! Rare ronrick1943 Posted November 18, 2015 #13 Share Posted November 18, 2015 You need to read the fine print and find the policy for you---but never leave without one. We've had to us it 2 times now. Worth every penny.

A lot of annual policies won't cover you if you are over 60. Also you can't take out the policy more than 60 days before travel. lilly4350 Posted November 18, 2015 #15 Share Posted November 18, 2015 Check Canstar. They rate travel insurance (amongst other things). Then you can do comparison pricing on various insurances. We ended up choosing Budget for our next trips. Not sure about the heart condition part though. Diane

dillpickle48 Posted November 19, 2015 #18 Share Posted November 19, 2015 I know this problem only too well. Give Covermore a try. I have used them for four cruises so far and had my heart complaints covered. Try them on-line first to get a quote. If you have problems, ring them. I had no problems with them for our upcoming cruises (the annual policy will cover 2 cruises ) and will seek their cover again next year. ozscot01 Posted November 21, 2015 #21 Share Posted November 21, 2015 Also check 1Cover. Many pre-existing conditions are automatically covered if they are stable. They are on-line but you can call them to discuss.
