gullcruiser Posted November 30, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 30, 2015 Hi, I'm traveling to Australia and New Zealand and plan to use my charge card for everything. Just found out that the new cards have chips in them but no pin is required. Will this be a problem that I won't be able to put in a pin?
CruiserBruce Posted November 30, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 30, 2015 We were in Australia for almost a month this year, with a Chip card (no PIN). Not a single problem. Discussed here frequently.
Birder1 Posted November 30, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 30, 2015 (edited) When I was in Australia recently (entire month of September), I used my CC w a chip fairly successfully. I was unable to use a debit card that did not have a chip. Please inform your card's bank of your travel plans or they may block transactions. I had to "insert" the card rather than swipe into the little machine & tell the vendor it is "credit w signature required"(even if it's a debit card) for it to be processed correctly. I highly recommend an RFID-blocking wallet/purse/etc. Edited November 30, 2015 by Birder1
wagtail_syd Posted November 30, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 30, 2015 Do you have a PIN for your card? In some situations you will need to enter your PIN and and in others you won't. The machine/operator will tell you which it is. If you don't need to put in your PIN the transaction will be approved after you insert your card, if not it will say "Enter PIN". The only time you will have problems is if you don't have a PIN at all and want to sign instead.

It was my understanding prior to going to Australia, and backed by our experience, that Australian business will accept foreign credit cards that have chips, but no PINs. We certainly didn't have any problems.

At least that is how it works in our office when someone presents with a foreign cc. :)
