emilygrace Posted December 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 21, 2015 Does anyone here know how far it is from Station Pier to the center of Melbourne? We were planning on taking the Melbourne Visitor Shuttle around the city, since it is similar to a HOHO bus. But I think we need to get into the center of town first. Are there shuttles (either free or pay)?
Jacs Posted December 22, 2015 #2 Share Posted December 22, 2015 It's about 5km. There isn't a free shuttle, you have the option of taxi at around $15 each way or tram, which would cost about $12-$15 dollars each depending on if it's a weekend or weekday. When we were there a few weeks ago the HOHO busses were actually at the end of the pier waiting to pick people up, rather than having to go into the city to pick it up. WAVTAM Posted December 22, 2015 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Just walk off, go to local store at end of pier and purchase daily pass for tram 109. Around 7.50 AU. Takes you to city center. Then you can use city loop trolley. The daily ticket allow us to move up/down city faster , by just jumping on 109 again.
emilygrace Posted December 22, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted December 22, 2015 Thanks so much for all this information. I just like to know my options so I don't waste precious port time when we get there, wandering around and standing in line to ask someone how to do this. I have a plan now! We were not going to do the official HOHO bus, but rather catch the Visitor Shuttle, and I don't think that goes all the way to the pier. Thanks again! iancal Posted December 22, 2015 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2015 We were there in early March. There were a number of local buses that went into town. There was also a HOHO bus parked on the corner. We availed ourselves of this. There are a number of cafes at the bus area. They off free wireless. We caught up while waiting for the HOHO departure time and then again when we returned. Signal strength was fine.

TMLAalum Posted January 3, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 3, 2016 Seems like it'd be more economical to grab a cab to the closest tourist tram stop from Port Melbourne, especially for 2 couples. Are taxis easy to get on a Sunday?

Rare Solent Richard Posted January 9, 2016 #13 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Welcome to Melbourne. Hope I'm not too late with my info. I was in Melbourne last year and wrote a review of the city on my cruise blog... http://solentrichardscruiseblog.com/2016/01/04/one-way-to-do-melbourne-australia/ Jacs is correct, the HoHo buses come down to the pier... For a faster ride into the centre the 'Tram' is also easily accessible from the pier...

Ferry Beach Kayaker Posted January 29, 2016 #19 Share Posted January 29, 2016 We are doing two B2B cruises from Sydney to Auckland and from Auckland to Sydney and will be in Melbourne twice. Can we buy a transit pass that we can use on both days about three weeks apart? What type of pass and how much money should we put on it? I think once we get downtown we will most likely stay in that area.
