Rare Coral Posted December 27, 2015 #26 Share Posted December 27, 2015 I am not a fishing person myself - but I have met a ton of people who have gone on expensive fishing excursions at the end of May (usually when I travel) and they were all very disappointed that they spent hundreds on this excursion and did not catch a thing or come close. They were hugely disappointed. I have yet to meet anyone who caught anything during that time. So when you are calling, ask the chances of getting something (if that is important). July, another story.
Alaskanb Posted December 27, 2015 #27 Share Posted December 27, 2015 (edited) One of the things that I do before any trip is to read historical fiction and non-fiction about the area. I highly recommend Pierre Berton's "Klondike Fever ". It certainly puts Skagway and the Chilkoot trail/train into context. http://www.amazon.com/The-Klondike-Fever-Death-Great/dp/0786713178/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=51x3b%2BZhwgL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR108%2C160_&refRID=0YM8CKGFKY6WGWK3ZM2E Another is "The Floor of Heaven" by Howard Blum http://www.amazon.com/The-Floor-Heaven-Frontier-Yukon/dp/0307461734/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=51s3a8QJw6L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR104%2C160_&refRID=17VCQ1192X1KJY9YR932 Novelists who write about Alaska include: Sue Henry http://www.amazon.com/Death-Takes-Passage-Alaska-Mystery-ebook/dp/B003V1WVVG/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Dana Stabenow http://www.amazon.com/Fatal-Thaw-Kate-Shugak-Novels-ebook/dp/B004UOH7PI/ref=pd_sim_351_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=515K2I6ZKyL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR101%2C160_&refRID=1NF1MEJQX4BN38112QV8 Some of my family from the UK homesteaded in the Palmer area and it was on our first Alaska cruise that we met their descendants. For us, the difference in changing the dates would cost too much to make it worth it. It's ultimately more important just to get there. Anything we do on top of that is icing on the cake. I think we'll stick with our dates.

I agree --just being in Alaska is remarkable especially when you live in a desert as we do.

I was just saying if you have your heart seat on catching some fish, make sure you ask what your chances are before you blow $400 pp. There are a ton of activities to do. mapleleaves Posted December 27, 2015 #32 Share Posted December 27, 2015 you're too early for salmon, but perhaps trout? Check the Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce web site.... call q couple of fishing charters and ask about peak times for trout. (Don't divulge that you're travelling mid May). Alaskanb Posted December 27, 2015 #33 Share Posted December 27, 2015 (edited) We stayed at the Alyeska resort instead of in Anchorage. It is a lovely place and well situated for day trips. http://www.alyeskaresort.com/events-activities/day-trips.aspx http://www.alyeskaresort.com/events-activities/culture-crow-creek-mine.aspx http://www.alyeskaresort.com/resort/facts-fishing-report.aspx Edited December 27, 2015 by Alaskanb
laughing husky Posted December 29, 2015 #34 Share Posted December 29, 2015 Not sure when you are coming in May, but think about the desk a river. Your mom can even go...Google Andy Couch....he is a great guide for the Deska, and I believe that he has a passenger price as well as a fishing price, and you would see a bit of Alaska that most do not see..it is is about an hour north of us....they have an early run of kings sometimes... txwriter Posted December 29, 2015 Author #35 Share Posted December 29, 2015 Our cruise leaves May 27,2017; I'm not sure exactly when we will come. It will depend a good deal on our itinerary, but I think the 17th or 18th would be our earliest arrival date in Anchorage. I will look into your recommendation. Thanks.
