Saving deck chairs....

Well I am an early riser. I have been accused of being a chog since I often get a clam shell on Serenity and use it until around 2:00. It is always occupied by myself or DW. Sorry that I can go to sleep at 1:30 and still wake up before 7:00.

with what you said, you cant be accused of being a chog. if you are there to be accused of anything... then you are there and you are not a chog.

a chog is someone who is not there so anyone calling you a chog doesnt exactly know what that is.

The big difference is that people who get up at noon or later and expect a chair to be there for them are the ones who feel they are entitled.

It's not difficult people, you want a chair, get up earlier than noon

What time people get up has nothing to do with holding chairs. If you are not in the chair for 30 min your stuff goes to the towel cart and find a different chair somewhere else. You also can't sit beside 3 other chairs and hold them for people.

towels that are saving chairs thrown overboard

flipflops that are saving chairs thrown overboard

books that are saving chairs thrown overboard

get the picture?

Do not pollute the ocean, if the towel is clean, it is free, if not return to the towel hut; flipflops- trash can; most- most can go to the trash but a few maybe be worth donating to the ship's library.

I haven't been on these boards long but, from what I have been reading, everyone is against saving deck chairs. How can it be that everyone is against it but it still happens? Are some of you not practicing what you preach? ;) Or are the people doing it not on the these boards and don't know better?

I will soon be taking my second cruise (the first one was 15+ years ago) and was hoping the practice of chair hogging had been addressed.

I always save 1 or 2 chairs. Who wants to sit among strangers while people in their party sit somewhere else.

But there's never a lack of deck chairs. It's the deck space they occupy.

I do wish Carnival would put a small set of cubbies near the pool/hot tubs. I HATE using a chair to hold my flops, coverup, and towel while I'm in the pool/hot tub, but other than the ground (which gets wet and walked all over) there isn't another place to put them. I do make sure I head back to the chair every 30 minutes, and if I'm with anyone else I'll just put my stuff next to their feet instead of using a separate chair, but it'd be nice to have some cubbies so I'm not taking up space!

This is from Carnival website:

RESERVING SUN LOUNGERS

Carnival Cruise Lines has a system designed to ensure that all guests are able to enjoy equal access to sun loungers by preventing seat saving in outdoor deck areas.

Shipboard team members monitor sun lounge usage and if they observe a seat that contains a towel or personal belongings but appears to be unoccupied, a notification is placed on the chair indicating the current time. If the chair remains unoccupied for 40 minutes, the contents are removed and held for the guest’s safekeeping.

Guests are advised of the system via public address announcements by the cruise director, signage in outdoor deck areas, messages displayed on the Seaside Theater poolside LED screen, as well as notices in ‘Fun Times,’ the daily shipboard newsletter.

There should a time limit on chair usage, just as there is a limit on chair hogging. It is absolutely ridiculous and inconsiderate for anyone to be lounging on deck all day while there are 3000 other passengers on board who want to have time on deck too. If you want to lounge all day book a room with a balcony or charter a yacht. You cannot expect to live like a queen but vacation like one of her subjects.

This is exactly the reason my husband and I take turns, so someone is there at all times.

I have to say the Breeze was GOOD! They were out and about putting stickers on the chairs.

DH and I got there around 9? Set up our chairs and went to grab breakfast to bring back to our loungers.

Gone maybe 12 minutes?

There was a sticker on our chair, and there was also a lady ready to take over our chairs.

She was NASTY. Her and DH almost got into it. She didn't understand the whole concept. I think she assumed since we were "stickered" the chairs were free game.

We explained that we had 40 minutes AFTER the sticker was applied.

She was SUCH a *****.

Needless to say, she walked away, mumbling under her breath....

Interesting morning......

Not sure why us "experienced cruisers" always seem to be the bad guy on these threads. For what it is worth I don't save deck chairs, I also don't feel the need to be anywhere near the main pool. I actually try to find a quieter place. If my husband and I have deck chairs and want food/Drink or need a bathroom breaks, we take turns so both of us are not gone at the same time and chairs are occupied.

I had the same opinion, until my most recent cruise. It was eye-opening. Rows and rows of empty saved chairs at 8 a.m. every morning, and many empty saved chairs all day long all over lido and Serenity. People saving sun and shade seats for hours, with cute clips to hold their towels on the chair backs. On past cruises, I had never seen chair-saving like this and thought it was being blown out of proportion on the boards.

I think it was the combination of experienced cruisers (gold and platinum cards were more common than red), people spending more $$ on their cruise having entitlement attitudes, and large groups traveling together.

What I have observed is that the vast majority of chair hogging is done by only a few people. When you go out on deck and there are multiple loungers in a row saved it's typically all in one family. So on a cruise ship that has 3000 passengers it's possible that even a small percentage of these can hog a large number of chairs close to the pool. Typically in reading these posts I have observed then approximately 1 in 20-30 defends the practice of chair Hogging. If one in 20 or 30 passengers on a ship containing 3000 passengers believes it's ok to save seats then very quickly it becomes impossible to find a seat out on the deck.

I'm just trying to figure out why the chair hogging was so bad on my Christmas Sunshine cruise and almost non-existent on my other cruises this year, even Easter week.

One big difference between the Christmas and Easter cruise was the percentage of gold and platinum cruisers. I have also never seen so many loungers with towel clips, which newbies seldom have. But I agree with someone else that it really only takes a small number of chair-hoggers cruising in large groups. The worst offenders I saw were claiming eight to ten loungers. Other people notice what they're doing and start to save chairs for themselves, so it gets worse as the cruise goes on.

This does NOT mean that every cruise is plagued with excessive chair hogging or that experienced cruisers are all chair hoggers.

It also doesn't mean that I didn't have a fabulous time on my cruise or that I would never take a Christmas cruise on the Sunshine again.

It has been the same problem since I started cruising in 2002, I also have found the same issue on my land trips I take. I don't know why some feel entitled to do this, but it happens every time - and not just deck chairs but seats in theaters to see shows as well. If we have my 5 year old we will put all our stuff on one chair close by if we need it but don't hold three because the likelihood I will actually get to sit in it is slim. When he is in the kids club my husband and I go search for deck chairs off the beaten path. I know some really want to be right by the pool, but I promise you there are chairs everywhere in quieter places. I do wish those in charge though would do more to enforce the rules.

Disagree. All 3000 other passengers do not all want a chair on deck. If a person is actually using a chair it's not the same as "chogging".

The only way (I) see holding a chair, is if my wife just left to go to the restroom, or she had to go to our stateroom. But she's coming right back! Now if you mean getting up at 6am and throwing a book on it and a old towel. Because when you really get up, at 1pm you want that chair! Oh I don't think so. I have seen ONCE people fighting over a freigin chair. But here's the kicker... The cruise line unloaded those party's off at a island! That's right UNLOADED THEM! People are amazing.

Nothing quite like a CHOG thread to get the juices flowing lol

It's an "issue" across every line, but the complaints also seem to be coming from those who get up at noon and expect some of the most coveted deck chairs to be waiting for them. Not saying you have to get up at 5:30am, but if having a prime location really matters to you then beat the crowd there, if not you can always find a chair, just not in the prime spots.

As far as choging goes, IMO there is nothing wrong with using your chair all day or holding 1 chair for your significant other/travel partner while they grab a bite to eat, use the bathroom, etc. Its the people who throw towels and books on their chairs at 7am and don't show up to use them till 9:30 that really grind my gears.

what is the ratio of chairs vs people who want to sit in the chairs ?

From what I can gather, there are more pax than chairs, right ?

Personally,, I like to sit for one hour, tops.

So, if someone is getting up from their chair to swim, for an hour or so, why can't I sit in "their" chair ?

And,, why is it "their" chair ?

Did they buy it ? lease it ? oh, no they just put their stuff on it !

How do we make everyone happy:

Those who want to sit in "their" chair ( whether they are there or not ) AND those looking for a chair ?

I am an early riser on cruises and I hate chair hogs.

On two different mornings, I was looking for a lounger on lido after breakfast at around 8 a.m. to sit for a very short time. The only loungers not being saved were on the outskirts of the deck in the shade. Other people unsuccessfully searching for a chair at about the same time included elderly couples who struggled to walk and a dad who wanted to supervise his young child in the pool.

If I am looking for a seat at 1 p.m., it's because I spent the morning supervising my children. Why should you "save" your seat while you sit somewhere else (lunch, casino, a shadier spot), when I could sit happily in your empty chair for thirty minutes?

I could have left towels on a lido lounger and a serenity lounger at 7 a.m. and then returned hours later to use "my" spots, but that would have been wrong.

Because, by Carnival's rules, one is allowed to save their seat for 40 minutes. If you don't like Carnival's rules, complain to Carnival, not the person abiding by the rules. And please don't use your kids as an excuse. It was your decision to take them so live with what that entails.

I doubt anyone with any common sense is going to take the time to take items off a chair on deck 9, go up to deck 10 and throw them overboard because when they got back the chair on deck 9 it would already be taken by someone else.

Get the picture?

if you are using it all day, that's not an issue. if you are gone past 40 minutes.... then the stuff can disappear.

I wont be a peach for those breaking the rules and stopping me from having a chair... this is true.

but if you are in the chair all day and only leave it for a few minutes at any given time and we are next to each other... I will buy you a drink if you want

Throwing stuff overboard is breaking a Carnival rule as well. So do you pick and choose the rules you wish to follow?
