Mlife benefits on Celebrity

I have found that the slot machines on Celebrity are very tight and usually avoid the casino for that reason. On Royal Caribbean we spend a lot of time there and do use the perks offered. My question is, has Celebrity loosened up the slot machines any? It's hard to spend much time in a casino with no return on money. I'm not talking about making money, just a little give with the take.

Our last cruise on Infinity, I won a $400 jackpot and $1,819 on another machine. My husband lost. We always budget a "gambling" amount, if we lose it we are done. i bought my winnings home, it is sitting in the cookie jar waiting for our next cruise. We enjoying playing, and winning is fun, but I have never been that lucky.

What is "Mlife"

There is no way you will ever get a good estimate of the payback on electronic gaming machines on a ship. For sure it will not be anywhere close to accurate when relying how gamblers tell you how they did.

I'm not a big gambler but on a rare occasion do partake of slots. For the few times that I gamble I am fairly lucky and tend to win -- $4,500. once -- tipped the waitress $20. for the diet coke and walked out with the rest. :D

I too, don't mind losing but I like the give and take, the up and down, that is what makes it fun -- and I've NEVER found a machine on X that plays so now I don't even bother.

Slots in general are one of the worst bets in casinos. While you might see some advertised at 97% payback, that only applies to those in that area. In casinos that need to compete for your business they will probably keep them in the low 90's and lower when there is a captive audience. In general, you can expect around 84% to be the lowest. Much lower and people do get disgusted, as the OP apparently did. Higher denominations might be set a little higher. Casinos are not required to report these settings except to their gambling authority, or at least that is true of US and Native casinos. The cruise ships however, are subject to the laws of where they are registered. Often Malta.

I have always found the first and last days of the cruise to be the best but on the Infinity, we actually saw a lot of winners throughout the cruise. One lady was playing a penny slot with only 90 cents in and walked away with $4000 and actually saw a man playing max on the triple play video poker and was dealt a royal flush on the bottom. Not bad at all ...

I got a royal on my last day as well but didn't begin to make up what we had lost. I don't find they are a lot worse than those you would find in Vegas.

If you have a decent Mlife status, be sure to introduce yourself to the casino host and show him/her your Mlife card. You may get some freebies out of it....if gold or above. We got a dinner for 2 at Muranos as well as free corkage on our wine that evening. Your playing money will not incur the 5% charge and you will be given some free drink coupons. These benefits are all dependent on things remaining the same as when we used them a few months back.

Celebrity has not loosened the slots in my opinion

But I'll agree the 1st day was pretty ok

The next 13 days not

And I was feeling lucky [emoji620]

Maybe I'll skip them next time

We did a NCL cruise in November. Spent some time with another couple who spent a lot of their time in the casino. They get comp'd all the time and cruise for next to nothing. So they figure their gambling budget evens out the perks they get for being "high rollers." Free drink package, specialty dining, and VERY inexpensive suite cabins. I prefer X to all the other cruiselines, but sounds like NCL is far more generous to those who frequent the casino.

This couple were curious about Celebrity, and said they would probably fit in better, but they did not like the idea of giving up on all the comps that NCL offers them. I don't blame them.

NCL, Celebrity, Carnival - they all seem to take turns as far as giving enticing reasons to return. At least, as it stands now, I get a 20% fare discount on Royal and Celebrity sailings... which totals up to some good pocket change as our next two Celebrity sailings are in a PH.

There was a time a couple of years ago where I could get ANY suite on Carnival for $500 pp. I quickly booked two sailings in their Captain's Suite (Freedom and Sunshine) which would have otherwise been about 6-7 grand for the cabin.

After our first Celebrity sailing on the Century (4 or 5 night as I recall), we were fully comped a concierge class cabin on a 10 night Thanksgiving sailing on the Constellation.

After our first NCL sailing (3 night Sky) we booked a suite on the Epic and received something like 3 grand off.

Each line sends out casino promos and flyers from time to time - and you can tell what "mode" they're in by just how far their willing to go to welcome you back!

Regarding Mlife and Celebrity - I called Mlife a few weeks ago and was able to bump my Mlife card back up to the Platinum level thanks to our Elite+ on Celebrity. Have not been to Vegas in a couple of years, so when we do return, it will at least be nice to have a couple of perks right off the bat.

Just off a 3-night Carnival cruise on Sunday. Managed $1,300 "arrival" cash (aka: loss rebate) and a few bottles from the host and manager. Here were the first two. Needless to say, I made a reasonable donation...

I agree that cruise casino slots are likely more tight then land based casinos. But then again all slot machines are lucky-you just never know when they will be lucky. When I sailed Reflection a year ago I had very good luck on the slots. I am a small time gambler and won about 300-400 dollars throughout the week.--Enjoyed reflection casino the best out of all the ships I have been on

The concept that slots are changed in a ship casino or any casino is the #1 myth of slot machines according to Simple Slots Magazine, an independent publication. You can also confirm this by a simple search of the internet.

Basically, a buyer of a slot machine purchases a machine from a manufacturers and says I want this type of machine with lets say 85% payout, as an example. The machine is then delivered to the buyer with that payout and for the most part is not changed during the lifetime of the machine. The part that controls the machine is the Random Number Generator which is a computer chip that generates numbers to correspond to the symbols on the machine. If in our example the machine pays out 85%, it does not mean it will pay 85% over a day, a week, a month or a year. It means it will pay over the life of the machine. There is no switch that magically changes the payout and the chip is generally not changed because it is too costly to do so, they might as well buy a new machine.

Additionally, on land based casinos it is illegal in most jurisdictions to change the RNG without approval of the State Casino Commission. Usually the RNG is changed when it is broke.

All this is assuming the current technology on the ships, can't tell you what will happen in the future.

All this info is readily available on the internet in numerous independent sources. Just do a search on RNG, suggest you put the word casino in because RNG is used in many applications.

Couple of other myths, one of which actually harms people if they play. Using a player card has no effect on whether you lose or win. As a matter of fact, in all land jurisdictions it is illegal for the card to have any relationship to whether you win or lose, so if you choose not to use it you're only hurting yourself with comps.

Finally, doesn't matter if you pull the arm, push a button for three or max play on a machine. Once you push that button or pull the arm, your win/loss is determined, just depends on where the RNG is in its cycle.

I've been on this board since its inception and have seen every variation of winning, before dinner, after dinner, on sea days, first couple of days of the cruise, last couple of days. On Bermuda cruises, winning always occurred on the way to Bermuda and losing on the way back. All coincidence.

Woohoo! You got it goin'!! We may just have to increase the casino budget on our cruises and tap into this! With Atlantic City a hop and a skip away, the ship casinos are not a priority, but your experiences sure give me something to think about!

If only there was a positive expectation to the whole gambling thing... ;)

If you regularly put black chips into play, they'll eventually take notice... multiple chips, even more so.

I did 3 free cruises on NCL from casinos in Atlantic City,, don't know if they still do it. Of course they weren't really free but we had fun.

I forgot one of the other myths which you see a lot and is really funny. Someone is playing a machine and gets up at which point someone else sits down and gets a big win. The first person gets ticked off and says that was my win. The first person would have won if they hit the button at the same, mille, mille second as the second person, next to impossible. There have actually been fights in casinos over that one.

As a non gambler I am curious as to what sort of spend is required to get the freebies and especially the free or largely discounted future cruises

That's a good question, but not one which is easily answered. I've seen people who lose $50-100/day receive offers for significantly reduced sailings. Generally though, you've got to be willing to put up a few/several thousand at risk to really have them take notice. That's been my experience... basically enough to pay for your current cruise multiple times !

From my experience on both lines I think you have to play a lot longer on Celebrity to get benefits than on NCL. I pretty much stopped playing on Celebrity after one cruise I played a couple thousand dollars during the course and got a t-shirt. Last cruise, believe wife and I only played the slot pull so expertly run by Wine-O.

Thanks for the chips tip! Although we tend to get noticed. A story for you: Once in Atlantic City, we were winning big. Hubby was drinking my drinks too, I didn't feel like it. Well the cocktail server put mickeys in his drink AND mine, so hubby had a double. He started acting really weird, and was overtipping everyone and their mother. I was sober, so I cashed out, nearly dragged him out of there, and got us home. He was passed out and I had to get his brothers to carry him in the house. (we were down at the Jersey shore at the time) The next day in the newspaper, there was an article about a ring of thieves at the same casino who were drugging patrons, so that they would have to get a room, unable to drive. Then they were robbing their rooms of their winnings, as they were passed out. Ah ha!! they didn't count on me staying clean!! We were told we should have gone to the hospital and have his blood levels checked and identified with the drug and we could sue the casino, since they were now aware of this ring of thieves happening!! We were not about to do that, were just grateful the drug did not cause an overdose, since he had two. Whew, some of the perils of the casino experience. Cruise ship patrons are not seedy like some others we have seen.

Anyway sorry for the tangent. Happy cruising (and winning)!!

I have read a lot about how slot machines work and agree with the myth buster descriptions in this post. The machines are programmed for the casino to make a profit. There is no need for them to change the percentage payout from day to day. It just seems like machines may be paying out more because it is all random and sometimes it will pay out a lot in one day and other times it will not. Overall slots are a bad risk for gamblers. We are likely to lose more then we win--I play to have fun and be entertained. Winning is a bonus.
