jvalentine Posted January 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2016 Hi All, I'm trying to prep for our first cruise to Norway that leaves out of Amsterdam this June. For a cruise leaving out of Amsterdam (and we'll be there a couple days before departure) how much cash to bring with us and if Euros or Kroners would be best? We have a card with a chip in it so no worries there, but for little things here and there would want a bit of cash just in case. As always, appreciate everyone's input. Thanks! Sauer-kraut Posted January 31, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 31, 2016 Kroner if your trip is majorly in Norway. You'll be surprised at how often you can use your credit card though. Norway is very expensive, do get sticker shock.
jasperado Posted January 31, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 31, 2016 Hi For Norway you will need Krone (NOK) and the rate is 1.00 USD to 8.67 NOK. Norway is really expensive! We went 2 years ago and in a small supermarket a 500ml bottle of coca cola was about 3GBP (just over 4 USD) !! Amsterdam you will need euros. We did not take currency with us, we visited an ATM as soon as we could and withdrew some pocket money and credit carded everything else. In the UK and Europe now we all hardly ever carry cash, everything is paid chip and pin either by debit card from the bank account or credit carded. but not so much Amex.......the commision charges are crippling to the businesses. Have a wonderful time, the fjords are a wonderous sight! Regards
hallasm Posted January 31, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 31, 2016 .. as for the other credit cards are widely accepted and can be used in ATM's. I have done Norway several times without NOK - in many shops Euro or USD will be accepted. Just do not try to exchange EUR/USD to NOK in a bank - might be quite expensive. dsrdsrdsr Posted January 31, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 31, 2016 The best currency is the currency used in the country you're visiting. Euros in holland, kroner in Norway. You would get by in Norway with just a credit card and Euros, but you would need to accept that some options would be limited. Just as if you went to Seattle with only Canadian dollars and a credit card - you could get by, but some things wouldn't be available.
