? about when purchases are charged to cards

I have used my debit card in the past and never had an issue, but was wondering if they charge for daily purchases, or the total purchases for the week?

Just wondering what people' have experienced

The last time I used a debit card (and it was the last time because of this) they had a hold on my account and then put through my final charges, which exceeded my balance. I found this out when we stopped for gas after leaving the port and I was able to check my balance at an ATM. I had enough for the gas on another source but was nervous about getting from Florida to Vermont with 7 people. By the time we stopped again the hold had been lifted from my card and we were golden. But had that not happened we would have been in hurting city. I do not know if they put holds on my card daily becaue I wasn't checking my balance but I've heard that if you make onboard purchases they put holds on your card to cover it.

The actual charge to your account is done at the end of the cruise and is just one charge

As you spend during the week, multiple authorisation charges are made, but only one actual charge hits (unless expenditure is found later, like mini bar use).

If you use a debit card, they will place a hold on it. After the cruise, it can take up to 1 week for the hold to clear. My MIL did this last year when she cruised with us and she was told up front there would be a hold. So if money is tight for you, you might want to select some other option, credit card or cash, because again the hold can tie up your money even after the cruise.

I was just wondering how they did it, when I stay at hotels I sometimes use my debit and was always told the hold could take up to 30 days. I was reading about multiple holds and was wondering if every drink ( we have ubp) would be on the hold etc. the only thing we really buy on ship is maybe a martini tasting and a bingo game. The casino on the other hand will get most of my spending money, lol.

Normally using a Credit Card your OB account is debited to the card about 48 hours after the cruise is completed.

If you use a Debit Card I imagine they will put a hold on every time you hit a specified sum ($300?) which means that you could have a number of holds on the card even after the final debit has gone through.

It is possible therefore for a Debit Card to have a debit and holds for a few days that come to double the actual OB account.
