New O'Sheehans Menu

Ok. Now I will play devil's advocate.

Changers:

Asian restaurant is now complementary.

Even if you are not in a suite you can choose to have a hot breakfast in you cabin. Yes, there is a charge but previously not an option.

Tired of buying all those drinks in the past? You can now get unlimited as s perk or for a cost.

Like specialty dining? But do not want to pig out? You can eat less and save money.

NCL instituted an unlimited wifi option in April 2015. I loved it.

I could care less about Jeffrey Z, Sponge Bob or guys with green faces.

I always tipped at least 18% in specialties or at bar anyway.

I love the crew. DSC went up. It should. I am in Accounting. The cost of employee benefits go up too. It is not just salaries.

Food and drinks prices go up. My restaurants at home raise prices. I am sure NCL's food costs have gone up too.

Was there a hippo and fireworks? I never noticed.

So UDP came and went? The new SDP means people get a mix of specialty and complementary meals now. It does not take a genius to know UDP meant a lot of people wanted to eat specialty all the time which meant some could not get in.

I am sure there are more.

Some of us are just fine with those changes.

I will concede that shortened port times is the one thing that bums me out.

Is the Asian restaurant free better? It was pretty mediocre when it was a pay joint.

Can't imagine its better quality now.

Glad you find these all positives, to me some are not very good.

I'm surprised that people didn't like the Shepherds Pie. I thought it was pretty good and almost made up for the loss of the Pot Pie.

The barbecue burger was really good.

Someone asked about the fish and chips. We tried it once and it was just about the worst thing I have ever eaten in a NCL ship. Someone once suggested that maybe Americans didn't like them because they were "British style". All I can say is that if a fish and chip shop around here tried to sell that then they wouldn't last long.

I agree not that good. It is my least favorite of the restaurants. However I was on the jewel when it was newly Instituted as free and it was packed so other seem to like it. I did like the sushi which I paid for. But as far as the complementary restaurant food openings not so much.

I've found the quality to be the same.....

they've also removed some items from the menu that used to be on the 'pay' menu.

Perhaps we can get back to the menu? If anyone is on the Breakaway, can you please post it?

We've heard that it's a bit different than the Escape menu, I hope it is, and am curious to see it.

What was said to be different? I'm asking honestly, because this thread strayed beyond my short attention span, and I've missed that part. ha! :o

I only ever used the noodle bar (not the restaurant) when it was chargeable. I always really enjoyed it.

Since it became free, I haven't noticed any change in the quality.

We did go to the restaurant a couple of times on the Spirit. I can't comment on any dishes which have been removed, having never been there when it was chargeable, but I have to say that we were all really impressed with the quality. A number of different couples went and the consensus was that it was the best food on the ship. Some of the people who said that had the UDP and had been eating at the speciality restaurants for much of the week.

It wasn't on this thread, but on other threads, people who have been on ships recently and seen a la carte restaurants have looked at the Escape menus and said that they were different.

I suspect this is because they had the temporary a la carte menus, which are basically the old menus with a la carte prices added.

We need to see a new menu from a different ship though before we can be sure whether they are exactly the same or not.

In previous rollouts, there have been some differences between the menus originally used on the new ship and those which eventually went fleet wide, so it won't be a surprise if there are some differences.

Okay, thanks. I was specifically referring to O'Sheehan's, but that's good to know about the others, too as I'm getting closer to my next Escape trip.

Can children order off the kid's menu at O'Sheehans? With mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers gone I don't see what my children will eat there.

....

Also, several sea days they didn't open until 1230 for lunch. I don't know if this was unique to my sailing, but 1230 is too late for lunch!!! ...

12:30 is too late for lunch? Am I missing something? That's pretty much a normal lunch time.

Does anyone have the menu for Blue Lagoon on Spirit?

I don't have the menu but I was on the lovely Spirit in December so I can share what I recall was on it... the tomato basil soup (delicious!), cheeseburger & fries, spinach dip and chips, wings, wonton soup, cheesecake, cookies....and yummy drinks! :) It was a bit different from O'Sheehan's but very good! :)

Is the pot pie gone from all ships or just the Escape?

The new menus first appeared on the Escape and are gradually being rolled out to the other ships. Somewhere here on the first page is a thread called 2016 new menu rollout which shows the schedule.

I need the pot pie on the Getaway! Haha. It's my favorite thing on the ship!

Our last experience at O'Sheehan's was in October on the Gem, so it was before the menu change. We found it inferior to the food we had at O'Sheehan's on the Epic on the prior cruise. Like someone else mentioned, the fish & chips were less than spectacular, while they were pretty good on the Epic.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just off the Breakaway today and can confirm that the O'Sheehan's menus linked to in the first page of this thread is what they have on BA. It changed the last week of January, a few days before Jan 31. The breakfast menu didn't appear to change at all.

Wings were great - nice to have different flavor options.

Nachos, not so great. Like someone else mentioned they had a cheez whizzy topping instead of real cheese.

Spinach and artichoke dip was unchanged I think.

The Irish Stew was more like soup.

The chopped salad was great and I often had it with the salmon you can have with the Caesar salad.

Other people in my group enjoyed the Caesar salad. I didn't try it.

I don't think any of us tried the burgers.

I had a hot dog and didn't enjoy it but my husband enjoyed his.

Others say the fajitas are really good but they don't come with a plate to assemble them on (ask for one).

I had the shepherds pie and the bangers and mash once each. They were ok but not spectacular. Nobody else in my group tried them.

Fish and chips were great most times and we're a little fussy on that. The fries unfortunately came out cold quite often.

Chipotle chicken sandwich - husband says it was good but not great. He only had it once.

The grilled Reuben was quite good and came with lots (almost too much) of meat.

Open face turkey or roast beef - my family says they were both were very good. (I really liked the potatoes, which you can get an order of on their own at midnight to soak up the alcohol.)

The desserts were all pretty good.

Can you tell we ate there a lot over the 14 days? :)

Considering all the changes in the last year...

  • Nickelodeon gone
  • Geoffrey Zakarian gone
  • 18% gratuity on specialty dining
  • DSC raised twice
  • drink prices raised
  • 18% gratuity on drinks
  • 18% gratuity on food/coffee purchases ( Java Cafe/Carlo's/gelato etc)
  • Asian Noodle restaurant complimentary but reduced menu
  • Hippo Slide on GSC gone
  • Fireworks gone
  • UDP is now SDP
  • UBP used to be for everyone in room, but now it's just first two passengers
  • Room service $7.95 except for a much smaller limited "continental breakfast"
  • Blue Man Group gone
  • Now pay taxes on "free" UBP/SDP
  • No more kids pricing in specialty restaurants
  • Port times shortened on a number of itineraries "for your convenience"
  • No more free Cirque or Illusionarium on first night with dining package
  • Margaritaville on Escape is now a la carte. Used to be included.
  • Cancellation policy got much worse.

Yeah, it's nice to see a positive. And yes, after I take this cruise that I booked since July, I'm taking a break from NCL. I'm taking my business elsewhere.

Most of the things you mentioned here had just recently started. Like UBP UDP etc. As for blue man and other shows, all shoes generally run on a 5 year contract then change. Fireworks was a nice touch but posed danger on ship and passengers. Wonderful show yes but any strong winds and it was cancelled. Again this was fairly new. And Nickelodeon was only 5 years old as well. I remember ncl pre Nickelodeon and it was probably even better. I agree with room service charge. Not fun. Drink prices raised due to so many UBP that it generally doesn't matter much. Ncl needs to just be themselves. That's what got them so far and so successful. Not following other lines ways. Yes it seems like they're trying to be RCCL sometimes and at others feeling out the Oceana approach. But all in all, if they continue to be themselves they won't need to find identity. They already have it.

No, those had been around for a year or so. I actually like having the option to purchase less nights, but the other aspects like gratuities and taxes are for the worse.

So why is Cirque, Illusionarium, Rock of Ages, and Legally Blonde still on the big ships? Why haven't the tired old shows on the Jewel class ships changed?

Explain how Disney continues to do fireworks on their cruise ships to this day.

And Nickelodeon was only 5 years old as well. I remember ncl pre Nickelodeon and it was probably even better.

Ask 20 small kids if they know and like Nickelodeon. Now ask the same group of kids how excited they are about the King Foundation taking over. Case closed.

It's the parable of the boiling frog. The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. There's nothing super huge on the list. It's death by a thousand cuts. Eventually people begin to notice the cut corners and begin to wonder why they're paying a premium for substandard amenities and tired old generic
