Family Searcher Posted February 7, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 7, 2016 Will be taking Avalon's Luminary from Zurich to Amsterdam in August. For tour guides and drivers, are euros recommended. These would be about half-day tours. What would be an appropriate tip for each? Thanks.

I have done this route on the Rhine twice and most tours are 90 minutes or so. Those are longer have drive time and free time. We generally tip 5E as a couple and 2 to the driver. Yes, Euro is the appropriate currency.
Family Searcher Posted February 8, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted February 8, 2016 I had seen previous posts which recommended tipping in dollars, which put a burden on the guide and driver. Made little sense. Euros are the way to go. Jeanne
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted February 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 8, 2016 I would say Euros -- even in Switzerland. Our Swiss guide explained that prices are so much lower in Germany that everybody who lives near the border goes over there for their shopping, so they can use Euros as easily as Swiss Francs. DrivesLikeMario Posted February 12, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2016 That's true. So many of the Swiss go to Germany to buy things when they can. Definitely Euros. That's what they want. Our Avalon Rhine tours on the average were about 1.5 to 2 hrs. with Heidelberg being about 4-5 hrs. The Heidelberg tour guide was really fantastic. Most tours we tipped 2-3 Euros per person. Some people never tipped, some tipped occasionally. It really wasn't a big pressure scene or talked about - it was very discreet - from what we experienced.
