Crows Nest booked for private functions DISAPPOINTING

In a number of ships the exploration cafe is in the crows nest.

Um, no. It's adjacent to the Crows Nest, with the library tucked in between. With a fair bit of seating available for those who can use the starboard side, rather than the port side.

If an area is closed (like for a M&G), is it listed in the daily On Location Report for the day so other passengers can plan around it?

Every single time a venue was closed off on any of the cruises I was on, it was not mentioned anywhere, except at the venue itself where a sign would indicate a private event was going on.

And of course an unlucky staff who had to deny access to all other guests trying to visit the venue

Um, yes, let's split hairs. It's not like it's a huge area:rolleyes:.

I recall someone reporting previously about a group closing the Crows Nest and I got the distinct impression that both sides were closed, which would include the Explorations cafe and the library.

I came back to edit a typo and the thread is getting shorter and shorter.

We have seen both sides closed on Eurodam.

I barged in and ordered my hot chocolate still because screw that.

I've had this happening to me as well on both the Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam. Last time on the Nieuw Amsterdam, a 14 day cruise, venues were closed restricted to a group (can't remember the name) without any prior notification. There were only about 20-30 people at most.

Crow's Nest, Lido Pool and Seaview Pool all were private venues. Sometimes even 2 at the same time.

Very, very frustrating. I wish there was a way to know if any large groups are onboard, because whenever a large group is on my cruise, a large part of the ship is off limits for the rest for a given time.

While I was a quite frustrated by this, I could go to another venue quickly. But there were some guests I bumped into who were also making their way to that venue, but those people had a hard time getting around and walking. Needless to say they were not so amused when I told them the area was closed.

I think it is very inconsiderate of HAL not to inform fellow guests who also paid a fair amount of money and are being limited in what they could do.

Since it has happened on 2 of my cruises thus far and you have experienced the same now, I am wondering if this is a regular thing.

There is a member here on CC who does a very good job of keeping track of large groups, charters and dry docks for HAL. And the list is updated sometimes monthly, sometimes every 2 or 3 months. It depends on how much new information is added.

I wanted to say that but I knew someone would hop out immediately and correct me if it wasn't true. Kinda like saying they are not in the same venue.

I know what you mean.

And, yes,,,,,,,, that is a rather silly splitting hairs. There is no wall, partition of clear separation between Exploration and Crows Nest. One flows into the other with no interruption.

There's a large wall of books (and the librarian's desk) in between. There are two small "passageways" but it's a real stretch to think they are part of the same space.

We were just off Eurodam and if I remember correctly, during one private function there was a wall pulled out between the Crow's Nest and Library/Cafe areas. Don't know if this was added to Eurodam or if this exists on all the ships.

On my last sail on the Z-dam there was a sliding partition separating the Exploration Cafe/library, and the Crows' Nest.

Not sure about other Vista ships.

I'm so sorry (GLP) that you encountered 20th annual The Phil Coulter Tranquility Cruise group on your cruise (irish music). We have been on a HAL cruise before with this group and this year we purposely scheduled another date on the Nieuw Amsterdam earlier in January just so we would not be sailing with them. In the past, I have posted in roll calls warning others about how this group takes over the CN in the mornings/afternoons/late nights, the Lido deck/pool area just about every night at 10:30(for an hour or two) and the main theater many afternoons.

DH and I like to hang out in the CN after dinner and as a paying customer in the closed environment of a cruise ship, we were very disappointed to told we couldn't go in most nights - it's not like there's many other options available other than the disco and the piano bar (both loud) or the sports bar (smoky from the casino).

IMHO I think they should allow regular passengers to use the small room that's off to the one side of the Crow's Nest and still have room for the "group" in the rest of the front area.

BTW I believe this group will be on one of the Panama Canal cruises in 2017. They haven't announced it formally yet.

I imagine that there are all sort of walls. There was no wall there in place in October. Usually there is no solid wall there unless it's new. Call a desk a wall or whatever you like. For all intents and purposes it's a large space.

Hmm, I never saw one on the Zuiderdam - not doubting you though, just I never saw one. Same on the Westerdam. Now there I wish they had used one as there were often multiple events going on at the same time in the Crows Nest, and it would have come in handy.
