Car rental with port shuttle

Thinking of renting a car for our post cruise day. We have a late night flight out of FLL. Thought we would do some sight seeing in Miami before heading up to FLL. Does anyone know if any of the rental companies have a shuttle out of Port of Miami to their rental locations? What would the cost be about? Thanks!

Alamo, National, Enterprise, Dollar, and Thifty provide free shuttle service from the Port Of Miami to the Rental Car Center which is located directly across from Miami International Airport. Avis, Hertz, and Budget have downtown Miami locations that are very close to the Port Of Miami. There are conflicting reports on Cruise Critic if those downtown locations provide free shuttle service. A taxi to the downtown rental car companies are relatively inexpensive.

I just rented from the Avis location downtown last week. They did have a free shuttle, but the line was so long waiting for it I just used Uber to get me to the port to start our cruise. You could barely wait on the sidewalk there were so many people. When we ended our cruise we had a late flight so we had another reservation for a rental for the day. I went ahead and just grabbed a taxi thinking it wouldn't cost much and this way I didn't have to deal with the shuttle crowds. Taxi charged me $22.80 to get to the downtown Avis location. Then when we got there Avis and Budget both didn't have cars. I had a prepaid reservation for 8 am and didn't get my car until almost 10:30. I had used Avis downtown prior but was not impressed with the taxi fare charged this time or Avis service.

Downtown Miami car locations - especially Hertz - are often overwhelmed by cruisers. In my limited Miami rental experience it is usually better to rent from the larger airport locations.

Based on what I've read we have decided to pick up a car at FLL and return to the Enterprise closest to the cruise terminal in Miami. It's actually about $35 less than returning it to Miami Airport. So that should cover the cost of the cab.

Then when we return we are going to the Miami Airport to pick up our car....I have read too many stories about the long lines at the Enterprises downtown closer to the cruise terminal.

I hope I'm going about this the right way......but if not.....live and learn.
