Best European ports to explore on own without a tour or a car

In my experience, most European cruise ports are pretty easy to do on your own, with a little research in advance. Far shorter is the list of ports where I'd recommend arranging a small group tour with your Roll Call (Ephesus; Akureyri, Iceland). The only port I did myself but wished I'd bought a tour for was the Faroe Islands - but not that many cruises stop there anyway!

One more European port that you should arrange a small group tour through your roll call is St. Petersburg, Russia.
