Can anyone recommend a good tour guide/group for Athens? We are just staying the one day and want to see only the highlights. 1/2 day-3/4 day type tour. Thanks in advance for any information.

You will probably get more and perhaps better suggestions if you go to the Ports of Call section of Cruise Critic, and ask on the Athens/Greece sub-forum.

George's Taxi has been recommended by many people for a very long time. We used them when we were in Athens in 2012 (pre-cruise) and had a great time. We used them to transfer us from the airport to our hotel, and then for a tour to Corinth with delivery to the ship.

I don't know if they do general tours as you seem to be requesting, but they might. http://www.taxigreece.com/

We also had a wonderful walking tour with "info@athenswalkingtours.gr" the year before (this was mid-cruise). We chose the "food tour" but they have many others. The website is at http://www.athenswalkingtours.gr/‎

Good luck!

We were very happy with Spiro from Athens taxi dot net.

His English was excellent, he was very knowledgeable, took us to some places that would have been hard to get to on our own, knew where to stand for great views of the changing of the guard, lent us excellent guide books for the Parthenon.

+1 for Georges Taxi, but you run the risk of shooting yourself in the foot with a request like this, because Athens is slightly unusual in that certified tour guides aren't permitted to take groups into many of the major monuments, because the Greek government maintains their own staff of specialists within each site.

For that reason, many prefer to hire only a car and driver for the day ( That is how George started).

On the other hand, without any kind of an overview, some groups may find a series of individual Site presentations confusing and hard to tie together.

The cost difference between hiring a Guide and hiring a driver for a single touring day should be about 40 to 50 Euros; just be aware that in either case, they won't guide you inside the Sites.

Good morning lodge.

Try this...

Relatively easy to do yourself at minimal cost and of course, the naval museum is something very different.

Hi fellow cruisers,

On our cruise on Sirena in June we are considering doing the hop on hop off bus.

We have used these buses in other cities and have found them very good.

The weather will be scorching in June and the open top buses will hopefully generate a bit of breeze when going along, must remember the sun screen though.;)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes, we've engaged George's taxi to pick up from the port to get to our hotel. Plus, I pre-purchased timed tickets which include a tour of the Acropolis Museum online to avoid lines.
