Does the casion close the three days Breakawaky is in Bermuda?

Just wondering if the casino closes while the Breakaway docks in Bermuda? I know in the past (years ago) they closed the casino when docked. On our last cruise on the Independence of the Seas, they kept the casino open while in port.

 

I'm thinking it depends on the country/port?

My understanding is that ncl opens casinos 9 pm -5 am while in port.

Is this something new (that the casino is open at night)? I always thought they remained closed the entire time in port in Bermuda. I had heard that the cruise lines were trying to get that changed but didn't realize it had actually changed?

Ok well 9 pm to 5 am isn't so bad. It would actually allow for pax to enjoy deck 6/7/8 smoke free until 9 pm

 

So a 6 pm 7pm ressie at le bistro could be enjoyed without the smoke coming in.

 

And a drink could be enjoyed in the 6/7/8 bar area and the sushi place etc

 

Opening at 10 pm would be better though

From what I understand, there was a decline in cruise ship calls to the island and the prohibition on gambling was believed to be a factor, so they eventually relented and passed this law. The number of ships calling is on the rise again, so maybe they were right.

 

In the broader context, Bermuda tourism has declined overall in the past few decades, with increased competition from Caribbean destinations. So this law for cruise ships was followed in 2014 by a law allowing casinos to open on the island itself (but apparently it will be a while before they actually open any).

NCL's smoking policy explicitly states that "Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours." I don't know how strict they are about that (but this is NCL after all, so probably not very strict). Agreed, like kids in adult areas / hot tubs or passengers holding lounge chairs beyond the "60 minute courtesy" or minors playing slots or no smoking on balconies..... it seems NCL policy is more of a suggestion to the staff...

 

I was on the Dawn last June and we had some pretty heavy rain heading to Bermuda and passengers where in the casino smoking while several officers, including HD and SC, walked by and acknowledged them with a smile and a wave...

Well of course they don't enforce the rules so that is why we booked the gem over the ba and that is why we only book insides and ov because Ncl can't be trusted to enforce the rules that they themselves put out

People who are sensitive to smoke have problems with the open layout of the casino on the Breakaway, and they have a legitimate complaint if the problem is allowed to persist even when the casino is closed.

 

It's not as big a deal if people are smoking in the relatively enclosed casino on the Dawn outside of gaming hours.

The gem casino is out of the way and easily avoided and does not interfere with enjoying the restaurants or bars.

 

The exact opposite is true with the ba casino

 

It is centrally located and totally open and interferes greatly with the enjoyment of deck 6/7/8 bars and restaurants IMHO it makes it impossible to enjoy a huge number of great venues on the ba and is one of the main reasons the atrium is always so crowded. Pax are trying to stay away from the smoke

NCL pays for a gaming license to operate their casino in port. Bermuda isn't doing it for free as a way to keep cruise ship business. Everyone makes money. Bermuda. The casino. The passengers. (Well at least two out of three). If a cruise ship does not pay for a license (and oversight from the locals), they can't operate their casino.

Actually, smaller cruise ships (up to 2000 passenger capacity) pay no license fees, and there are indeed more small ships calling at Hamilton and St. George's (according to this article, for example) although the numbers are still pretty low, and the increase is not necessarily linked to the gambling authorization.

 

For the Dawn and BA, the license is $75,000 or $150,000 for the entire year, which does not strike me as exorbitant. Like you said, everyone makes money, and there's nothing wrong with that :p
