firemanbobswife Posted May 16, 2016 #402 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Neither I nor my sister walk around sloppy drunk. And if my sister was drunk in the casino, how would I know? Roz Same here. If my cruise mates want to go whooping it up after I go to bed, that's on them. They are grown adults and I'm not going to spend my vacation babysitting. Nor do I need a phone call every 30 minutes as to their whereabouts or sobriety status.

Computer Nerd Posted May 16, 2016 #404 Share Posted May 16, 2016 You can't lock people up for talking about jumping overboard. Why did Princess keep selling her booze? She wasn't cruising alone, she had another man with her. How many really took her seriously? It was the booze talking, people drink and do stupid things. Passengers were really ticked off at her for ruining their vacation. We missed the first port. No one seemed to care about her, they had waited and spent money for their vacation and a stupid act ruined it. My thoughts go for the family, they're left holding the bag. i don't know about in other states and i don't know about at sea but in florida they have what is called the baker act where someone can involuntarily be held against their will if it is believed they could seriously harm themselves or someone else. it is a psychiatric hold. and it's a lot cheaper than installing a system that may or may not work. Computer Nerd Posted May 16, 2016 #405 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Wow! I didn't know Cruise Critic was an expert on the frailties of a person in a very serious emotional and mental distress!I've read though this thread since yesterday morning, skimming through the technical comments and ignoring the ignorant comments about how selfish people are who feel suicide is the only route to take. I just couldn't ignore the last few comments, however. I feel so badly for the children and the family left on board. They are feeling a horror that the rest of us can only imagine. My thoughts are with them. They don't want the condemnation from people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. The other people on the ship are surely feeling very subdued. I feel for them as well. That's all that needs to be said. if a person is so severely emotional distressed they shouldn't be allowed to cruise. do you think she put on her health information form everyone is required to fill out prior to the cruise that she was suicidal  i bet not. Computer Nerd Posted May 16, 2016 #406 Share Posted May 16, 2016 I would gladly pay an increased fare if the system saved the life of just one person. You would feel the same if it was a loved one who they saved. you know you are free to cut a check to carnival and pay for the whole system.....right  otherwise, all you have contributed is maybe a washer or a gasket and you have to rely on others to pony up as well. Computer Nerd Posted May 16, 2016 #409 Share Posted May 16, 2016 We likely won't ever know (unless it can be discerned from the video and is made public) but that may have been exactly how she wanted it. It actually seems like a much more likely scenario than a 33 yr old woman wanting to sit up on a railing so badly that she arranges equipment (a speaker?) in a way that she can get up there - by herself, at 2am, just to sit. I hope for her children's sake that it is ruled an accident. very possible. insurance pays out for an accident but usually not for a suicide. Computer Nerd Posted May 16, 2016 #412 Share Posted May 16, 2016 (edited) This may be the dumbest thing I have read on CC. saying you're happy with a price increase to obtain a system they you think carnival should have knowing full well that if your price goes up so does everyone else's is pretty dumb as well. or else you're happy sticking it to everyone else so that you can get what you want out of life. personally, i'm not happy paying for someone else's irresponsibility. FloridaMommyof3 Posted May 16, 2016 #413 Share Posted May 16, 2016 I haven't read through the recent replies on this thread, but just saw an online followup that said she was indeed sitting on the railing and fell backwards. Very tragic, but not a place you are supposed to be sitting.

So, instead, you prefer the US taxpayer to pay tens, if not hundreds of thousands of $ to search for a missing person. What do you think the USCG did this past weekend? They had a 4-engine Lockheed C-130 search aircraft out there looking for her for at least two days during daylight. Do you think this aircraft costs $100 an hour to operate? Try $15,000+ PER HOUR! I could not care less about you getting a cheap cruise fare. You sail on Carnival, this is what you get. Deal with it. Carnival and the tax payers pay for passenger stupidity, and so should you. Edited May 16, 2016 by loubetti
Raxter54 Posted May 16, 2016 #415 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Just curious - anyone have any idea what this MOB system would cost to install? A million per ship? 2 million? Carnival could schedule their ships to have it installed during dry docks. I'm sure spreading out the installation cost over numerous years wouldn't affect fares thar much. I'm sure Carnival could take some sort of tax write-off for this. The only question I would have - Cheng has spoken of the systems unproven effectiveness. Would it really be worth the cost? ryano Posted May 16, 2016 #416 Share Posted May 16, 2016 (edited) Would it really be worth the cost? Id venture a guess and be willing to bet that those systems still would not prevent people from intentionally jumping or doing something stupid and "falling" overboard. I would also guess that a large majority of people this happens to are very likely dead a few seconds after they hit the water, especially when jumping or "falling" from a upper deck with the ship at cruising speed. Most of the time they suddenly disappear too and the bodies never found. I hate to sound morbid but I follow each and every one these "man overboard" stories pretty closely and thats the opinion Ive formed. I think someone in this thread has been listening to Jim Walker too much. JMO. Edited May 16, 2016 by ryano

CruiseBride926 Posted May 16, 2016 #419 Share Posted May 16, 2016 I think we may never truly have answers. I don't see carnival saying it was a suicide even if it was because frankly it's none of our business. Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming anyone for wondering I mean it is only natural but I don't think there's any benefit for them to inform us further. Butterbean1000 Posted May 16, 2016 #423 Share Posted May 16, 2016 They will be able to tell how much alcohol was consumed that day/evening by checking he S&S card. Agree we have all used poor judgement at one time or another. This very well could have been one! Unfortunately this will not be the last of someone going overboard, whatever the case may be. That may not be an accurate way to determine how much she may have been drinking. She may have had alcohol in her room from Bon Voyage or smuggled booze.
