Millenia98 Posted May 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2016 Should we get an apartment in Nice for the 5 nights or should we stay 3 nights in Nice and 2 nights in Provence? We will have a car the entire time and don't mind driving or taking the train. I was thinking to rent the Nice apt for 5 nights. Then do a full day trip or tour to Provence. See Nice, Eze, St Tropez and VilleFranche the other days. And then maybe an additional half day in Provence. Or should we stay 2 nights in Provence (to experience Arles, Les Baux and Roussilo) and then the remaining 3 nights in Nice?

But we would not spend 5 nights in Nice..although Nice is nice :). We would suggest splitting you time with a few days in a good location in Western Provence. Consider a city like Avignon (or the smaller St Remy if you prefer small towns) or Aix en Provence for at least 2 nights. In fact, when we do spend an entire week in the region we normally prefer to be somewhere in the Avignon area because of its central location to places like the Rhone wine area, the Sunday market at L'Isle sur La Sorque, Les Baux, Pont du Gard, etc. etc. Hank

Why not 5 nights in Nice and day tours? Is it that you don't need that much time in Nice to explore the surrounding area I mentioned?

Is it that you don't need that much time in Nice to explore the surrounding area I mentioned? You can do a lot around Nice. If you want to see some of the Provencal cities, it is 2 hours and 30 minutes to Avignon, 1 hour and 45 minutes to Aix. You could also stay two nights in Aix and do the day trip to Avignon, les Baux and Arles, spend the second day in Aix and visit Cassis. Then you could have a leisurely trip to Nice driving through St Tropez, Grimaud and Frejus along the shore. And, somewhat unlike Hank, I do enjoy Nice very much since we used to live there. There is plenty to see in the surroundings.. For example, you could drive up to the mountains to visit Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Gourdon after visiting St Paul. You could continue on to Monaco and Menton after Eze. You have a lot of options.
Rare Hlitner Posted May 21, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) Thank you! Why not 5 nights in Nice and day tours? Is it that you don't need that much time in Nice to explore the surrounding area I mentioned? I actually like your thinking. In fact, we will sometimes rent an apartment for a week and just take day trips. But as much as we like Nice and some of the places nearby (especially St Paul de Vence and Eze Village) we find the Avignon area even better as a base for day trips. Using Nice as a base to head west to places like Avignon is a bit of a stretch (more then 2 hours each way). Nice is a decent base for exploring the area between Cannes and Menton (or even into Italy), but Avignon (or some other towns such as St Remy, Arles, etc) are better bases for exploring some of the best of Provence, the Luberon, etc. On the other hand, if we were to spend 5 days (or even a week) in Nice...we would never get bored :). Belle Posted May 21, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 21, 2016 I would stay there and take day trips. We've stayed there three different times for a month and took some day trips by train, bus and boat but then again I had more time. That's what I would do but any way you do it would be great and you'll have a great time.
