Punching hole in card

Recommended Posts

I seem to remember someone saying that you can no longer have a hole punched in your card to wear on a lanyard. True?

not true- i was just on the Majesty 3 weeks ago and they did and i was on the Grandeur last April and they did it there too. No worries. Maybe it is only certain ships?

I believe the Quanum class ships and Harmony have a card with a chip inside, so you should ask Guest Services to punch the hole because they know the safe place to punch it.

Bob is correct. Quantum class and Harmony use chip technology and there is a chip and antenna in those cards. There are places where you can still safely punch them. I am pretty sure you can google this too. I found a diagram on line before I boarded Anthem.

All other ships - punch away.

Not really true. If you know where to punch, it can be done without damaging the card. I just did a search on here and there's lots of posts about how it was done successfully on board. You can even find the X-rays that have been taken.

And if you did damage the card,GS will give you a new one.

But frankly, why not just buy the clear sleeve lanyard?

I'm sailing on Anthem in a couple of weeks, can you give me an idea as to where I can punch my card please? Which side? Right/Left/Top/Bottom???

Thanks!;)

I can't post the thread links from tapatalk. But the posts are easy to search. It's over or near the image of the Northstar.

Here you go.

The Anthem (and Quantum) sea pass cards use a different technology (RFID) than the cards on older ships. There's an antenna (maybe other electronics) in the card that could be damaged by a punched hole.

This has been discussed on a number of Anthem threads (e.g., the one linked below). One person reported that he or she had x-rayed a card to see where the antenna was, and concluded that it would be safe to punch a hole about an inch in, over the image of the North Star capsule. No idea whether that person was correct or not. (Going that far in, you'd need a really long clip at the end of a lanyard to get to that hole.)

We like lanyards too, but we were fine without. We used the WOW bands, and kept our sea pass cards in a pocket (when we were wearing clothes with pockets). And of course you could use a clear plastic sleeve attached to a lanyard if you really want.

My seapass card got punch with a cute little star shaped hole when I went rock climbing on board Serenade of the Seas a couple of weeks back. I guess it's for them to know that you've already signed the waiver so you can keep using the facility without having to sign a new waiver each time. I've also seen kids running around the ship with their seapass cards attached to their lanyards by looping a string through a hole in them.

I guess there's no issue about punching holes in them. You just have to be careful to avoid punching a hole through the magnetic strip at the back otherwise you won't be able to open the door to your cabin or make purchases on board the ship. But then again, this is an older ship. So you have to double check with the exact ship you're sailing on. :-D

Cheers!

If you take your card to guest services, they will know the safe place for the hole and will be happy to punch the card for you.

Enjoy

..until they won't.

Why wouldn't they punch a hole in the card? I get one punched every cruise either by GS or the casino. Not for a lanyard, but to put the card on a key ring so I can easily locate it in the cabin or see it better in a slot machine.

If the card has some chip or other reason that it cannot be punched, then the passenger should not punch it either.

The new RFID cards (used on Quantum class and Harmony) are more expensive than the old cards with a simple mag stripe on it. GS may be hesitant to do it since a hole in the wrong place can ruin it. We have several reports, including in this thread, that GS has refused to do it on Anthem.
