Polonius Posted June 22, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 22, 2016 I am interested in trying some video poker when I sail on the Dawn. I have never gambled, but thought it would be interesting to give it a whirl. I have walked around the casino, but was intimidated to try any table games. Any thoughts for a newbie? Rare BirdTravels Posted June 22, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Video poker has a bit of strategy. You do not play against anyone. Just trying to get the best 5 cards. Have fun.
CalLuvsCrusingToo Posted June 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Practice online before you use real money. And then play small denom like nickles til you learn more. ALWAYS Play MAX coins, whatever denomination you play. I used to carry one of those handheld little battery operated vp games with me, and would play it in Doctors office, carpool, etc. It really helped to teach me strategy. Otherwise, stick to slots. VP takes time to learn, and can be expensive if you make alot of mistakes. Good luck.
clcjdn Posted June 22, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2016 There is an app for Apple devices called Iwin Poker or WinPoker, something like that. It teaches you the correct holds and keeps track of your accuracy. In addition there is videopoker dot com that allows you to play for free on actual games from the casino. If you want to play VP long term, I would suggest checking these out. Good luck!

Sand and Seas Posted June 23, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 23, 2016 They have some VP games you can play for pennies a hand. Check-out the touchscreens to change the denominations and be careful if you hit 'max bet' when you are on a higher denom:eek: A good place for practice is at videopoker.com It's free to play but they do run adds on the sides of the screen. I've used that site for years to practice for trip to Vegas.....or a cruise! Have fun:D
dznymom Posted June 23, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 23, 2016 Both videopoker.com and the winpoker app are great tools. The issue with video poker on cruise ships is that the payables are very poor, so do a little research on that ahead of time. Also, there are many different versions of vp you can play, but I recommend learning Jacks or Better first and then branching out if you master that. It's been awhile since I was on the Dawn, but they had a wonderful Casino Staff when I was there. I had some decent luck on the slots, too. Have fun and good luck! Polonius Posted June 24, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted June 24, 2016 Sounds great, I have been practicing. Good point about watching the denominations.
clcjdn Posted June 24, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 24, 2016 The win poker app has the capability to change pay tables and run the calculations. It will also give you the payback percentage with optimal play. I am happy to give up a few percentage points while CAS "comps" me to Platinum....9 more days and we are there!
